Yep, I had a very similar experience the first time I tried an HST. After stalling it out, I thought to myself "I don't think I like this HST stuff." Then, sanity returned and I started thinking about why. It dawned on me that it behaved exactly as if I'd tried to push into the pile in too high gear. Duh! So, from then on, I started thinking "Transmission, transmission, transmission. More pedal = higher gear." Basically, the same thing you had to do.
