I'm thinking nitrogen is acidic, straw more alkaline. Just my guess though...
Maybe some lime?

soil is sandy on a gravel ridge , hopefully can have my renter dip rip this fall that should help , i have access to lime if that would help?

Yep. Go to your local elevator and get a couple bags of hydrated or pelletized lime and spread that thick on the muck and let it sit for a month or so.
