Man, I have to say that I was not looking forward to cutting around the house today. Instead of all the creature comforts like cab, radio, A/C, clean, quiet ride, I instead stepped back in time. Looking at the tractor that had not been used for quite some time, I decided to hook the battery charger up while I was busy for an hour or so. I checked the water, oil, etc. Everything was good to go except for gas. Yeah, gas. So I dumped a 5 gal jug of gas in her, hit the starter, and brought life back to the Farmall H. Backed from under the shed, hooked to the cutter, and started mowing. Yeah, all the new tractor features are nice, but also numbing. New tractors have advanced so far that it's like a Sunday afternoon drive. But not the Farmall. This is tractor operating, not driving. You get so much more of the whole experience. Sitting high soaking up the sun, feeling the heat from the motor, listening to the gas engine (runs like a sewing machine!!), oh how I missed thee! OK, so I probably would not like to do it daily, but it was nice for a little while. Riding down memory lane!!

I think it may have cooled down there a bit for you to be so frisky. Or was this a day that was 100 degrees, humidity 99%, no breeze, dust up your nose, and horse flies?

Nothing like REALLY remembering how the old days were...and why things are different nowadays:thumbsup:

Yesterday and today was the second hottest weekend we've had this summer with an average high of 96 or 97. I spent ~16-hours hucking and spreading 110-tons of recycled concrete road base for my neighbor's driveway and ours. We covered an estimated 7,600-square feet to a depth of 3" over our existing driveways.

Oh yeah, what a joy to be in the heat; though Bambi's canopy provided shade, concrete dust covering you from head to toe from the wind, the roar of a wide-open-throttle diesel to get the most from the HST and system hydraulics (Yes, I wore ear-plugs), nasal congestion even with a mask, concrete dust on the water bottle, had to wear a full face shield yesterday due to the wind.

Screw the 'Good old days;' my next rig will have a cab.

I had fun today on my non cab tractor cleaning up the shrubs around the church in 110 degree heat(index) no shade whatsoever for about 5 hours. About 20 loaders full of trimmings done with shears weed eater, and chain saw. Makes a man out of you. I love it.
Planted 6 food plots yesterday. You should all come to Ms or Al to experience humidity.

How far back do you want to remember? I can sharpen a stick for you and point you to a clay bank if it will help.

Wow, I almost feel like going out to the family farm where I spent my youth and firing up my old NAA; almost...

Sounds like rutwad was having one of those MANLY MAN types days.

Some of us...well, it's a steady thing...some of us, it's an occasional and sudden primal urge...

It was about 99 degrees and 87% humidity, so it could have been better. But I was only out for a couple of hours. Any longer than that even on a cool day would have seemed more of a honey-do chore than leisure time. But just remembering how it was with no live PTO, no power steering- the new tractors really "numb" up the farming experience. And sometimes that's good!

This tractor was around before I was. It is where I learned how to back up a trailer, how to bush hog, etc. And to get back on it was pretty cool. BTW, backing a 6' rotary cutter isn't that easy!

My Ford Jubilee is my main farm tractor, so I get plenty of time to 'reminisce.' I use it to mow 20-30ac of hay with a 7' sicklebar. Also bale with it and get along good, despite the fact that EVERYONE says you can't run a square baler without live PTO.

I plan to run it until I can no longer buy parts for it, then maybe I'll get something more modern.

I haven't seen a sickle bar mower in a long time, that's all we used 20 years ago. When I bought my tractor there was a brand new one sitting on the lot. I asked the dealer if that was reconditioned or new, he said new (but I made the guy pay for it before I ordered it because I haven't sold one in 20 years. I always thought they did a pretty good job.

I always thought they did a pretty good job.

They do, but most people these days don't know how to adjust/maintain/opperate them, which is why people think they are junk.

I can lay down hay almost as quick with my Jubilee and 7' NH 451 sicklebar as I can with my fathers 2550 Deere and 7'8" NH 616 disc mower. And I can turn a square corner with mine, something I've found virtually impossible to do with a 3pt mounted disc mower. ;)

Any of you folks wanna reminisce I've got a '72 Mitsubishi R1500 that'll leave some good old bruises on ya after ya run the brush hog around a while. Just keep your rpms at around 2k and don't hit nothing cause she likes to climb trees once she gets warmed up. But my that metal seat sure is as comfy as she looks. Which ain't much at all. :)7

This thread is proof of everything that's wrong about the very existence of Starbucks.

Hmmm.... sounds like your trip back in time is similar to my regular day on my 2008 UTB made Montana 5264 (Romanian, same as the old Universal). 2008 yes, but un changed technology from the 60's.
