I'm not quite ready to buy, waiting for the first snow to see how my tires do, but I want to be ready if necessary. I have an L3400 with R4 (15x19.5), loaded tires and a 70" rear mount blower. The driveway I have to clear is about 70', on a relatively steep gravel hill. I am obviously concerned about traction, so I want to be ready to get a set of chains if need be. I came across this pair of V-Bar Ladder chains. Do you think these would be adequate? AND, will they fit my tires? I've read a few threads on here talking about how close the R4 tires are to the fenders on the L3400. Has this been an issue for you guys? The general consensus seems to be that if you keep them tight, there won't be any problems.

Also, while were right here, anything advice you can give for putting the chains on? The only experience I have with installing tire chains is a couple of time on a 1 ton dually. And those times were not fun times!

Back a few years ago I had some extra dough so we looked at an L model and the show stopper was the tight fenders.

It can get muddy where we live and the thick mud fills up ag tires turning them into slicks so it's chains on year around for us all 4 tires.

I have never used that type of chain before and don't think I like them...sorry I can't give you a specific reason why.

Anyway if you already have 'em go ahead and put them on now before it gets cold. Also get some monkey links they break on you. Good luck

I have v-bar 4 link chains from the same place on my rear tires and 2 link v-bars on my front tires. The 2 link chains give better traction and a smoother ride but they cost more.

They work very well and allow you to go anywhere and you never have to worry about your tractor sliding sideways on a slope:eek:

I had to reverse my front wheels in order to have enough room for the chains to move around but the rear wheels were fine. You should check with your dealer as to the clearance on the L3400.

I hate putting my chains on my tractor. After researching many of the past posts on chains here on TBN I found the easiest way to put chains on. Place a bunjie cord on top of the tire and have it hold the front of the chain in place and then drive the tractor forward. It's still a pain but this method makes it much easier.

The attached picture illustrates how chains improve traction

I've got basically the same set up, an L3400 w/ loaded R4's. My gravel drive is 2,200' long and steep in sections. Using my head and going slow I've never had a problem w/out chains. But I've considered them. But I've also read a lot of posts saying chains on R4's on the L3400 are all but impossible to make fit. I wasn't willing to plunk down the $$ to find out for myself. Hope you fair better.

I had to add wheel spacers to my B3030 to get enough clearance for my chains. I am using 2 link v-bar both front and rear. My rears are loaded for extra weight. I have a very steep (30 degree in sections) driveway/road and I don't anticipate any problems with traction.

I have the V-Bar chains on the rear of my L2800 with the R4s and the same size tires and have no problems with clearance with the chains as long as they are tight. You will see how tight you have to get them. I also have them on the both front tires and dont have an issue there either. If you put them on all 4 tires, Be WARNED your tractor will keep on plowing, pulling, or whatever. It will seem like a diffrent tractor, But be carefull so much traction and power you dont wont to break anything. Good Luck
