I actually spend my time designing and shooting fireworks displays for a living. We started the business about 15 years ago. As far as designing and building houses I'll leave that up to the experts. Building my own was one thing, I'm not sure I'd do so well trying to figure out someone else's vision.

And LarryD - I did have that beer you mentioned. Thank you.

Jeremy, As others have said you have done a fantastic job with your house. We are almost ready to begin renovation to our old barn including adding a timber frame great room. I am trying to figure out how wide to make our fireplace. Our great room is 28' x 24' We were thinking of having a 42" firebox and perhaps 20" of stone on either side. Can you tell me the measurements on yours? Over all how wide is it and how much stone do you have on either side? That would help us visualize what ours might look like. Thanks. Your house is beautiful. Rick

Hi Rick,

I know off the top of my head we were 6' between timbers. I'll put a tape to the doors and amount of stone each side for you tonight and will let you know. One problem we ran into was our fireplace mfg specified the rough in opening however they did not mention clearance for the combustion air intakes. Since the intakes were on the side of the unit we ran into problems with clearances that required us to put on our thinking caps to make it work. Ended up doing some metal fabrication to move one of them forward toward the outside of the house. Just thought I'd mention it just in case.

We have 72" between the timbers. There is 12" of stone on each side of the fireplace and 48" of metal showing. Also 12" of stone between the mantle and top of fireplace. The inside of the firebox is 45". Not sure the actual outside dimensions of the box now that its covered in stone. Hope this helps. Let me know if you need anything else.

Jeremy Thank you for the information. Thanks for the heads up about the fresh air intakes. I would have guessed that your stone area was wider then it is. I am glad I asked. I think I will make ours a little wider then your to give me more room for the fresh air pipe to make the bend into the fireplace. Thanks Rick

Your welcome Rick. The room for the bend was the problem we ran into on the air intakes. Because ours is a see-through fireplace one of the intakes was closer to the interior side of the box and one was closer to the exterior side. We were able to do a straight shot outside on the outer intake but couldn't make the bend on the other. If your intakes are on the side of the unit like ours a little extra room would be a good idea.

Rick,

one more thing I'll mention since I'm assuming some type of kitchen or remodel will be in the works for your project is our cabinets. Almost all of our lower kitchen cabinets either have pull outs or drawers instead of the traditional swing doors. We really like the drawers and pullouts. Everything is right in front of you and easy to reach. No bending over or trying to look inside to find what you want.
