Tiller transfer case

Yes, I know, not connected to a tractor, but this is the best audience for this kind of threat.

Anyway, I killed my tiller last year. The transfer case got busted - see the picture. It was stamped metal to start with and those little rivets just didn't hold.

It is MTB I believe, chain driven, front tine tiller.

It took me almost a year to build a new transfer case. I used 3mm thick steel, reused the tine shaft bearings and oil seals - this time bolted them to the case - and after much head scratching and impro and compromising I have a working tiller again. The case is servicable, unlike the original and built much much stronger too.

I sealed the case with silicon, there appear to be no cracks and it is - so far - not leaking oil. I also used grease to coat bearings and left quite few scoops of grease in the case - the plan is for the gear oil and grease to mix to thicker goop than just oil.

It works and yes, the case looks like something from Jules Verne

The chain drive is forgiving, otherwise I wouldn't try it without better equipment - like a mill.

Excellent Job. I am not a tiller of soil but almost picked up a tiller transmission a few times at princess auto for 99 bucks. Lots of shafts (tines and drive wheels) but could not figure out how I could use one.
