Tiller for 2305

I am currently waiting for arrival of my new 2305 but I have a question about a tiller for it. I'm not looking to buy one so my question is not what size is the best fit but whether or not this tractor can handle a 60" tiller? A friend of mine has a New Holland 60" tiller for his Boomer tractor and I was thinking about borrowing it to till my lawn and then seed it because my lawn is in terrible shape.

I think the best size tiller if I were to buy one would be 48" but do you think the 2305 could handle a 60" tiller just for a days work? I believe the weight is around 500lbs so I don't think that is an issue.

I'm very new to these tractors so any feedback would be appreciated.

I use a 52" and it handles it ok with the loader as ballast and rear tires liquid filled. You might be able to take off some tines at one end to enable it to cut less.

I myself wouldn't try it. For one 500lbs on the back PLUS whatever dirt sticks to the underside is probably going to be too much weight. I use a 52" tiller and I run it as deep as it goes- about 5"- and I can tell she's working, the fuel consumption while tilling is unbelievable. I use no extra weight of any kind on the front. With weight on the front you can try the 60" and run it shallow but I believe there will be enough "dirty weight" to make it a challenge to lift.

I think 60" is way too much for this machine.

If you do try this, be sure the PTO shaft is not too long before you hook it up and raise the tiller. Reason for saying this, I saw a new 2210 in at the dealership where a guy purchased a new tiller, did not check the PTO shaft clearance raised it and destroyed the rear end physically, broke the PTO output shaft off and trashed some gears inside. Chances are if this happens, it will not be a warranty issue, he paid out $2800 on a machine with less than 5-hours to be repaired. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I'll bet that guy reads over the PT0 shaft adjustment instructions a little better next time! That was an expensive lesson, money would be much better spent on extra attachments.

I have a 2210 and I just purchased a KK 48" tiller from TSC. It weighs 600 lbs. The 2210 seems to handle it just fine (with a FEL to weigh down the front).

So, I know the 500 lbs will not be a problem. I really don't think the 60" will be a problem either.

The only problem I could see is if you are trying to till some extremely thick grass in clay-like ground.
Has your soil of interest been worked in the last couple years?

Terps2002, I just bought the house a year and a half ago but if I had to guess I would say that the soil has not been turned in many years. The soil is pretty soft though, not claylike so I don't think that would cause a problem.

okay, lets be specific then; I have a Frontier RT1150 tiller with a working width of 49" and a weight of 325 lbs. This tiller with some dirt on it makes the front of my 2210 awfully light with no weights on the front. Terp, are you <font color="red"> sure </font> that 48" tiller weighs 600 lbs???? I see it is listed at 600lbs "shipping weight" on the web site but is that accurate? The KK appears almost identical to the Frontier/woods unit...

No, i am not <font color="red"> sure </font> the tiller weighs 600 lbs since I didn't weigh it myself. I am assuming the advertised weight is correct. I can tell you it is extremely heavy, I was barely able to budge it when it was sitting on the ground. I can also tell you that I would never even attempt to mount the tiller without the bucket on the front.

I saw a JD tiller at an auction two weeks ago. It was about 48". I was able to move it around myself, something I cannot do with the KK.

Now with that said, I have no clue why the tiller is so heavy. I really doubt it works any better or worse then other brands. The only reason I went with the KK is it was the cheapest 48" available.

The Frontier RT 1250 (also 49") looks similiar to RT 1150 as well, but RT 1250 weighs 427 lbs. Just a difference in standard duty vs. medium duty. I'll bet the 48" KK does weigh 600 lbs. My CCM 49" tiller weighs 572 lbs.
