Throttle plate screws missing on Kohler engine

I have a JD STX38 with a Kohler engine. The engine suddenly went full bore and shut it down and found the throttle plate disconnected inside. I do not see the screws. Do I need to pull the engine apart to get them out before firing it up again? Or can I get two new screws and move on?

What model Kohler, I have numerous service manuals.

Before I pulled the head(s), I think I would pull the plug(s) and use a flashlight to look inside. Never know, might get lucky.

Those screws can bang around in a cylinder, ask me how I know. It may be a pain, but get them outta there or risk major damage, which would be a real pain. This was a B&S 15 horse riding lawnmower in my case, but the principle's the same. I didn't find out about it until the thing went full bore and made a heck of a racket while I was mowing.

I agree. Find those screws. They may be pounded into the top of the piston.

When I was a kid my older brother lost a wing nut into the intake of a turbocharged engine. He figured it would "work its way out". It did, after it took out the vanes in the turbo and they in turn took out the engine.

Look in the muffler first.

Engine model is a Kohler CV13S

Removed plug..did not see anything. Looked up muffler, nothing.

Look at the point of entry, intake, under intake valve, cyl., in the exhaust valve. If not there, you got lucky.

I ended up dropping it off at a repair shop this morning. Will be 12-14 days before they can look at it. Bought it used 7 years ago and never have had a problem that I could not fix myself. Although, seems like poor engine design to put tiny screws in the carb that can be ingested into engine.
