For years we had a 3pt splitter and it worked ok but was painfully slow when hooked up behind a 30hp tractor. My dad then decided to hook it up to his 120hp ag tractor that had a lot of hydraulic flow. It worked good, but the fuel burn was terrible. He finally went to Tractor Supply and bought a 35 ton self contained County Line splitter. It works great and will out work the 3pt splitter hands down.

All my small engines are old Kohlers. I’ve had real good luck with them, currently own 4. The one powering my welder is straight piped with a 5” exhaust tip- looks comical, but puts up a huge racket, almost sounds like a Johnny Popper. 😁
I love the older Kohlers My Powerking has an 8 hp Kohler on it. I think that tractor is early 80's and that old motor is still going strong. I'll bet your neighbors love that welder when you are welding.:LOL:

I bet you it won't out work my 3 point splitter, no way no how and I run my 3 point with a small tractor that barely sips fuel.

my now dearly departed neighbor was an immaculate sawmill millwright and vehicle gearhead. He got his hands on three point splitter and said “nope”. He bought a Briggs and a pump,had an axle and wheels, a proper tank for hydro oil, put together and it was just perfect. Components need to matched up just right for superior performance.

I have a 13 hp real Honda on my new splitter and wouldn't trade that engine for anything. It is the easiest starting small engine I ever had. It even has an electric start on it, but I have never hooked it up to a battery because it will start on one pull every time.
I’ve got an 8hp “real” horizontal shaft honda on my splitter. Came new with it 20 years ago. Starts first pull every time, as long as I shut off the fuel valve the previous run.
Thing really sips fuel. Been perfectly reliable

I must be the only old school guy here with a freshly rebuild 1974 vintage 32ci 16hp cast iron Briggs.
Loads of low end torque. Idling at 1400 rpm it will generate 2500psi without stalling driving a 28 gpm 2 stage pump.
