This year's leaf vacuum

For spent rifle/pistol casings I would imagine a lot of the rounds would be from bench rests, could be tricky with a large machine.

I would pick up a used backpack blower/vac

cut the suction hose install a sealed bucket/box to serve as a seperator install a piece of hardware cloth screen on the outlet hose fitting in the box.

Then just empty the bucket when full.

You could even mount the whole deal on a small four wheeled cart and extend the suction hose, just pull the cart along with you.

It is action pistol shooting almost every week (4 times a year pistol, rifle & shotgun) most of the bays are 25 X 30 yards and there is no set shooting position. I too thought about using hardware cloth but I imagine I would spent too much time removing grass. We have been using this Home they were originally designed to pick up pecans and acorns; they too however pick up as much grass as brass.

Due to the weight of the brass shells compared to the grass clippings, dropping them a couple feet in front of a fan would probably remove most of the grass. Then you have clean brass ready for reloading or sending to the scrap yard. A conveyor belt with a fan mounted under the end would allow you to dump the shells out on one end, allow them to scatter a little, and as they fall off the end the grass would be blown away, and a catch chute to channel them into buckets would be the last part.
