We have a fenced yard, so we are not sure how it happened. Our schnauser got out this morning and got hit right in front of our place(the car didn't stop). My wife was looking for him after letting the chickens out of the hen house at 7am. She saw him on the road and came running in franticly crying and pointing. I went out and lets just say that he didn't suffer at all....it was bad. Schnauser's can be diffucult at times(when other dogs are around or seen...we lovingly nicknamed him the "arse hole"), but mostly do their own thing and are very loyal. We rescued this one 5 years ago(ironicly) on a major road in S Fl where we guessed he had been dumped. I would guess his age to have been around 10.
My wife is taking it hard. This is the third dog I have had to bury in my life and it just doesn't get any easier. I had been milling some cedar yesterday, so I made a nice headstone, and we placed him by a favorite spot on our creek.
It has lit a fire under me to get the house built up on the ridge 1/2 mile off the dang ROAD.
Sorry, y'all, but just needed to yap about it.....as it just hurts......

RD, very sorry to hear that. As you know it doesn't get any easier. We have a little spot here on the farm at the top of the hill, overlooking the lake for ours.

Sorry to hear of your loss. Though I have buried a good many pets due to sickness and just plain old age, it has been a long time due to being hit on the road. I guess that I might have been about ten when our australian terrier did not come home. By the time we found him, only a scraper would have removed him from the road. I guess that left a lasting impression because after I was on my own and had my own dogs, I fenced in my yard or have been fortunate enough to be well off of the road. Like you said though, even with a fenced in yard, your dog got in the road somehow.

Had it been me that hit your dog, I would have (and have done so) stopped to let you know. I don't know if it the law to stop in TN or even here in KY but it is back in PA where I came from.

Anyway, most times people are just too much in a hurry to care but then there are those that go off over it when someone does stop.

Give it some time then get another pet. Somewhere, there is one that will be an even bigger pain in the butt but in a different way. Regardless, you will grow fond of that one as well.

Thanks all. We have 2 Welsh Terriers and are dog sitting my daughters pup out of their last litter. Without the Schnaz to bark at the horses(and get all the others to bark) every time they go by in the pasture, it sure is quiet around here. He definatly taught them bad habits...used to grip about those habits....miss 'em now. Anyway, I am more worried about my wife as she is in a funk that will take some time.
Her is a pic of the Welsh's & Archie.....R.I.P. Arch...

I am sorry to hear that. We lost our first ever dog - aussie, with eyes blue just like all our children - when he was 6 month exactly the same way. Fenced property but he made it through the fence chasing a cat and car hit him right there.

I like your welshies - we have two airedales, same color, just bigger.

Sorry to hear it ! Pets become a major "part" of the family,..and it really hurts to lose one. We've developed a little pet cemetary out back over the years,..some marked.

I have a Dremel electric engraver, (for my stained glass work). A flat piece of scrap cement ruined a good engraving point (replaceable), but made a decent stone for another "old" dog.

Attachment makes their passing painful! "King", a Shelty I loved (dearly), had to be put down,(a few years ago)..in kindness,. but such an ordeal I swore I'd never have another, ..couldn't take it again.

Few years later, my daughter (in town) had to get rid of her dog,...part Lab/Shepard and asked if we'd take her on the farm? "NOPE,..well,..JUST till you find her a home", I barked ernestly!! ...I fought hard, (very hard!)... but dirty-doggon-dad-blame-it-all, ...I fell in love !

That dog eventually, needed personal care, and old "Jesse" slowly lost the use of everything but an embarrassed and apologetic big, sad eyed look that broke my heart,.(again)! ...Well,. thats the one I made the stone for! It's "never" an easy task!!!

God Bless those that "care" for our dependant animals. If we hadn't domesticated them, they wouldn't "depend" on us,.....so I believe we owe these creatures, . . big time !! ~~Do whatcha can for 'em~~

We're dealing with a sick dog right now and even though he's getting better I can sure sympathize with what you're going through because we thought he might not make it at first. Very sorry to hear about your loss.

Sorry to hear about your dog. Nothing much one can say, but time will help your wife get over it.

When our Dear Sheba died last year, a dear friend sent this poem by Elizabeth Turner, titled "As I Should.

I still cry when I read it. . . . . . . . .

I sob now, as I should,
As I hold you one last time.
Black fur against my face,
Breathless, a nose no longer wet.
The words I love you land on now deaf ears.
My pet.

I cry now, as I should,
As I put away your things.
The collar with your name,
The leash that brought such joy.
The dish, the quilt, and hardest still, an old stuffed bear.
Your toy.

I forget now, as I should,
On the first day, when I wake.
Stepping over the spot where you should be.
Empty space beside the bed.
This uncertain day must yet be faced.
My dread.

I ache now, as I should,
For the change in daily life.
Stillness yet unflinching, quiet so unkind.
The respites come but they are brief.
Until I hear a bark, or see another walk their dog.
New grief.

I smile now, as I should,
When I think of moments past.
The not quite perfect antics.
Stealing food, the wetness of a sloppy kiss.
Shredded tissue, messy beard, weight pressed against my leg.
I miss.

I think back now, as I should,
Through all the days we shared.
Loyalty in earnest, valor, beauty, grace.
The embodiment of what we humans should but don't hold dear.
And yet I feel you whisper, in the hardest moments still.
I'm Here.
