Thinking about an AR-15

KubotaSteve,
Congrats on making the decision to buy an AR. Also, good on ya for showing wifey "the light" and getting her onboard. America needs more people like you!

There is NO alternative to a good AR! The AR is tried and tested (Military, Law Enforcement etc.) and won't let you down in a pinch...providing you keep it in good running order and choose acceptable ammo (don't shoot steel cased or corrosive powdered ammo, I mean, you can, but I don't recommend it...).

I own a Colt AR-15 A-2 Government Model. It has a fixed carry handle and telescopic stock. I intentionally bought it this way...reminded me of the M-16's I used in the Navy while on the auxillary security force. I love the iron sight profile...once you learn to use it, it's deadly accurate and extremely quick in obtaining a sight picture. Military surplus ammo is hard to come by these days, but in the past, I can remember when you could get 1,000 rounds for under $200.00. We're talking Federal XM-193, which is SUPER ammo! When the conflict is over in Iraq/Afghan., the prices of surplus ammo will come back down.

One of the greatest features of AR's is the ability to accessorize them. They have more implement options than tractors! You can affix just about anything you want to them. If your plan is to "trick" them up, be sure and tell your dealer. He'll point you in the right direction on how to get started and the proper platform for doing so (flat-top receiver etc.)

I also own an Armalite AR-10 A4C. This puppy is in 7.62 caliber. It ain't no slouch and it kicks! It lets you know you are slingin large chunks of lead down field!!! It's completely flattop, therefore I can add a plethora of goodies to it. I added pop-up sights front and rear, and am in the market for a Trijicon ACOG for it. My wife told me that once I have the pink slip for my tractor in hand, I can get it :):) (just a few more months).

I went with Armalite and Colt because they started it all and I have friends who own them/swore by them. If you go here: M16 rifle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia you can read all about it for yourself...interesting really, how the development transpired. I do want to mention though, Colt AR's aren't as receptive to another manufacturer's products as some of the other brands, where interchangeability is relatively easy. Also, Colt isn't easy on the wallet.

I'm not going to knock any other brand of AR on the market...no need to! They'll all do the 'job' and make for excellent home protection, defense and relatively inexpensive critter whacking (at least ammo-wise). Rock River, DPMS, Bushmaster, etc. make a fine weapon. As you'll see when you start shopping, PRICES VARY...and there's a pretty big difference between one brand and another (hundreds of dollars).

Post a pic when you get one! I've enclosed a few pics.

The AR closest is the AR10, the back one is the AR15. Oh by the way, my wife loves shooting the AR15...there's virtually no recoil and believe it or not, she can hit like a champ with it.

Ps. That ain't rust on the AR-10. It's stained from the oil or whatever compound (like moly-b) that they packed/shipped it in. I've rubbed it and tried to get it off, but no luck yet. :)

Thanks for all the input. Two things I know that I want is the telescoping stock and the flat top for a scope. I also want the .22 LR conversion kit which I will get at a later date probably.
Keep the suggestions rolling.

On a side note, I had the chance about 10 years ago or so to buy an SKS for $69. The only issue was that the wooden stock was in rough shape, but I would have changed that out anyhow. I've regretted pulling the trigger (no pun intended) on that deal. It was from a surplus store that closed up shop a couple of years later.

KubotaSteve,
You can also look at a bonafide AK-47 (non-full auto of course) for under 200 dollars still in the box. They are not as accurate as an AR (but close enough), and they are far more reliable. Ammo is extremely cheap and it will fire anything on the market without hesitation (brass, steel, corrosive, non-corrosive, boxer primed or not)!

That may be an option if you want extreme reliability in all conditions, ease on your wallet and dirt cheap ammo.

Don't know what (if) factors are limiting you.

I would agree partly; the AR is kinda like the 1911. There's a whole industry around custom parts for those two weapons.

After following a link or two from this thread, and googling another, I was very surprised to see all the stuff that is available for the Mini-14 that wasn't when I had mine some years back. HBAR's, fluted barrels, shock buffers, etc
Custom Ruger Mini 14 30 Rifles Accuracy Systems Gunsmith

A lot of cool new stuff out there for both rifles :D

Please fill me in on where at that price! I have one but might get another...I haven't seen any under $300 in quite awhile.

Future plans involve an EOTech holographic sight cowitnessed with a set of back up iron sights.

You'll never know how hard it was to take that picture by myself:D (the weapon is not on a bench)

Get the EO tech that takes standard batteries. Easier to replace.

On AK's and price, it all depends on where they were made. There is a difference.

Agreed. But I still haven't seen an AK for $200 in a very long time...if I could get one for that I would, I want to leave one at my mountain place...want cheap in case it gets stolen, dang sure ain't gonna leave a $1K AR there;) I already leave a .410 there....I sometimes ride up on the motorcycle and I just can't carry an AK or AR on that...at least not without getting the populace in a panic:eek:

Everyone is calling me out.

Good!

I'll post the phone number to the shop that's selling them as soon as I get an American Classified paper. It comes out tomorrow.

Podunk, in all honesty, I was not "calling you out", just haven't seen an AK go for $200 lately.

Keep in mind, with a half decent machine shop, an AK wouldn't be that hard to come up with. Just one of the MANY reasons why it's one of the most popular assault rifles in the world.

If I only had one gun to take, Mr. Kalashnikov's rifle it would be.

P.S tell the blonde her nose needs to be situated on the charging handle and she needs to be leaning forward:D
