Thinking about an AR-15

I'm sure I'll get flamed for this but I would not recommend a AR-15 or anything with it's operating system. I has been, is and will continue to be a very poorly designed weapon system that has been plagued with problems for decades. Having been an armorer in 7th SFG(A) when I was in the Army I had the opportunity to shoot most all weapon systems, the M16 design was the one that malfunctioned the most. Ask most soldiers who have been in combat and they will tell you they would rather have a assault rifle based on the AK-47's operating system.

Are the black rifles easier to modify with more parts available, sure. But function comes before appearance in my book.

No, I'm not going to flame you for your comments. The gas operating system in the AR platform is more prone to problems (powder residue, crud, sand etc.) There is however a motorcycle machinist in one of the North Eastern states, who developed and obtained a patent for a recoil operated system for the AR. This system places the recoil spring in the handguard. I can't remember the name of the company, but I have seen and shot one of the conversions. All I can remember is that the name of the conversion starts with a "Z". I have also heard that this conversion has seen limited use in Iraq. I will try to find the name of the company. The conversion sells for around $1500, which isn't cheap.

I have several ARs but my favorite military rifle is the M-14. I still believe this is one of the best designs ever produced for the military. The Garand design was far ahead of it's time.

The HK 416 is a good upgrade from the M16 gas system. The HK 416's system of operation is based on the HK G36. It was originally a joint effort between 1st SFOD-D (Delta Force) members who approached HK about designing a better piston operation system. The end result was the HKM4. Of course Colt Defense wouldn't let that go and filed a suit for trademark infringement which led to the new HK 416 designation.

What happened at Torii Station? Sounds like I missed something in Okinawa.

Agreed. But I still haven't seen an AK for $200 in a very long time...if I could get one for that I would, I want to leave one at my mountain place...want cheap in case it gets stolen, dang sure ain't gonna leave a $1K AR there;) I already leave a .410 there....I sometimes ride up on the motorcycle and I just can't carry an AK or AR on that...at least not without getting the populace in a panic:eek:

Look for an SKS for your mountain rifle...they're still pretty cheap.

Or there is always the old standby M1-A/M-14. A very solid robust firearm and probably one of my favorites...

No flaming here either. That's why you'll see a couple posts up that I said "the AR was more accurate, but the AK is far more reliable". I know exactly what you mean.

P.S tell the blonde her nose needs to be situated on the charging handle and she needs to be leaning forward.

I heard that:). Despite my teachings of the same sight picture every time, she won't get "intimate" with it. She did have the leaning part going on prior to the first shot, but what you can't see from the still is that she was about 3-4 shots into a 10 shot rapid volley. I'm sure you know how hardheaded a wife can be.

Everyone is calling me out.

Good!

I'll post the phone number to the shop that's selling them as soon as I get an American Classified paper. It comes out tomorrow.

Whoa! No one called you out.
But I'd like to know where to get an AK for $200:D

True to my word, I found the advertisement. But, to "Eat Crow" and in my defense of the $ amount I posted, it's because I didn't FULLY read the advertisement in the thrifty nickel.

The ad has $200.00, then starts with AK-47's, SKS' etc. The price STARTS at $200.00.

Being that I'm not in the market, I just skimmed the ad and didn't pay close enough attention to it, saw $200.00, then AK-47...blah, blah, blah. I should have read on!

So, I called the number, which is:
(850) 926-5500

Name of Business:
Gunsmoke
Address is 2219B Crawfordville Hwy
Crawfordville, FL 32327 (Close to Tallahassee)

The guy said that they ocassionally get in AK 47's for that price, but they are used, but in good shape, and NOT RUSSIAN made.

He also mentioned something that I didn't know and I'm a little skeptical on. He said ONLY RUSSIAN MADE AK-47's can be imported into the U.S. fully assembled and be "new in box". All others are assembled in the U.S. from parts and pieces, then sold as new in box. He said to be wary of advertisements stating such fallacies. Some kind of trade agreement.

They have brand new in the box, RUSSIAN AK-47's in 7.62x39mm for $319.00. This weapon has a warranty.

So, I was WRONG in stating you can get a new AK-47 for $200.00. I misread the advertisement in the Thrifty Nickel. SKS's and used non-Russian AK's can be had at that price.

Still, if money is an issue, 319.00 is a heck of a lot cheaper than the $1400.00 I paid for my Colt AR-15.

Cheers---

Not so much as what happened, but who picked up on it.

Mr. Stoner seems to be an icon of some sorts. I guess perhaps we could never admit to making a blunder.
