Why do you want hollow tubing instead of solid on a subsoiler? Just asking.
Steel is usually sold by the pound.I thought the 2x2 1/4" tubing would be easier to find local.I would have to drill the hole for pin through the solid piece.

Is this one of those projects where you might be able to buy something already made VS making it yourself?

I've used onlinemetals.com for smaller pieces....

YIKES! 2" square solid steel is salty!!!

How about something already made for not much less than a 3' piece of new square stock?

I've built several. Usually use 1/4" wall.

Where a problem appears is if you try to use normal square tubing to make the female part.

\I learned that the receiver (female) part is METRIC tubing.
Local steel supplier carries it.
Also it has no weld seem on inside.

Sq tubing and pipe is sold by the foot.

Unless you buy it from midwestmetalwarehouse.com
I use them for some small items I need.
They have good prices on some small item things.

Isn't tubing sized by the OD (outer dimension)? 2x2x1/4 or 2x2x3/8 or 2x2x1/8 are all 2x2 on the outside....Or am i missing something here?
Correct tube is OD dimensions. Pipe is the ID dimensions.

Yep. It's that inside seam that is hard to deal with. :)

If you only needed part of the square tube to be reinforced (or solid), you could buy an appropriate length of 1.5" OD stock as a welded-in insert...though a significant seam inside the 2" stock might make is a bit challenging to do the insertion.

Correct tube is OD dimensions. Pipe is the ID dimensions.
That is just backward, pipe OD doesn't change with thickness- schedule 40 pipe is same OD as schedule 160- the inside hole just gets smaller and smaller. Piping OD is not true sizing as example 2" pipe is 2 3/8" OD regardless of thickness.
Tubing is ID measurement, the OD changes as the tubing gets thicker. This is same for round tubing as square tubing.

Edit: not that most folks will be dealing with larger sizes but I thought I should clarify. After pipe reaches 14"nominal size the OD is the actual size of the pipe so 14"pipe OD is 14" and this is true for all sizes above 14". The thicker the pipe is then the smaller the ID becomes.

Pipe "NAME" is ID dimensions, as the pipe was measured in early thick-wall lead pipe days.
