Re: They\'re at it again!

Reed,

About the mini-trackhoe for $4500...I've seen a couple crazy deals like that, and I think it is outright fraud.

Recently there was a new Polaris Quad, the biggest baddest one, with only 30 miles for $4000 buy it now with free shipping. It was a one day only auction and bidders had to be preapproved. I emailed the guy to get preapproved and he said the auction was already closed but he had several. He would ship them from Portugal and I would have them in 72 hours, freight free. I just had to send him the money order first. Yah, right. I looked some more at the pictures on this guys auction and they were copied off of a legitimate auction, right down to the trailer the quad was on and a piece of trash laying on the deck of the trailer.

The other scam has been when I recently was in the hunt for a 50-75kw generator. I would bid on a unit and shortly thereafter I would get an email from an eBayer, always from Eurpoe, saying he had 10 of these brand new for a rediculously cheap price, free freight and I'd have the unit within 24 hours! I just had to send a money order. I responded that I would take alll 10 COD and the guy went away. Since then I have seen several more of these. The COD always stops the correspondence. Be warned though, several of these guys were showing 100% feedback on eBay. I am curious about that part.

On a positive note, I bought a sold a fair bit on eBay with good results, but be careful.

Baloney! -Re: You guys are being too tough on Ebay

Caveat emptor Let the buyer beware!!!

There is so much "funny business" going on with ebay, you really need to do your homework (knowing what something is really worth) and be very cautious. I've complained and documented to ebay about the obvious shilling going on, only to deaf ears.

BTW I did buy my JD790 on ebay (out of state), but only put the deal together after having a local JD dealer check it out (at my expense). Prior to the JD790 purchase, I did drop several others due to obvious shilling and other "issues"...

Re: They\'re at it again!

Mountain Man,

Please don't change the SUBJECT of existing threads. Here I thought it was a NEW topic, only to find out otherwise.

Just to make it clear, eBay is just a mechanism to get BUYERS and SELLERS together. They do not validate the products being sold.

They steal the legit user's ID. Have you ever gotten an e-mail that appears to be from e-bay asking you to update your account info? That is how they do it. The e-mails are not from e-bay and when you enter your user ID and password they have you. They then go to ebay and change your password and you e-mail address so that all e-mails go to them and they start selling under your good feedback rating.

Thanks for clarification on the eBay feedback issue. I was wondering if they were imposters.

Re: Baloney! -Re: You guys are being too tough on Ebay

Like Dave, I have both bought and sold with good results on eBay. I did bid on a backhoe last week, and then eBay ended it early. I found out that this guy was not in Georgia, USA like he advertised, but in Portugal trying to pull a fast one. If you can pay through BidPay or PayPal, your chances are better that the seller is legitimate. I am always cautious of the "money order only" sellers.

Re: Baloney! -Re: You guys are being too tough on Ebay

I'll try to steer this back in the right direction. The first person to see a grey, diesel tractor advertised with a rebuilt "carburetor" wins.

Another way to do this is to get the SUBJECT back to the original.

Re: You guys are being too tough on Ebay

Sound guy
I too have been burned on ebay
but I also have done many great deals there too!
I bought a yanmar generator for a song, only to find out it was a chinese copy, I got my $$ back but I lost the shipping charges $300. ouch! /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif
And they did kick the guy off ebay for doing it.
I still shop there with a watchful eye though /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: They\'re at it again!

Gatorboy - Here's eBay's stated policy about fraud:

"eBay pledges to work closely with our community of members to ensure a safe trading environment. We welcome reports of suspicious activity and will investigate and take appropriate action as outlined in our User Agreement."

Well from my experiences with eBay they don't seem to make an effort to "investigate and take appropriate action". Just my 2 cents.

BTW - I apologize if I inconvenienced you about changing the subject, however note pugdaddy previously changed the topic - Which got my attention! - I just added the baloney... which is probably what it is anyway /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
