The Swarm

/ The Swarm #12
When I was a kid my dad kept bees.

They are actually very easy to work with when they are swarming................unlike what you see in the movies.

We were able to cut the limb a swarm was attached to walk it over to an empty hive and brush the bees inside.

A dozen years ago we had a swarm take up residence in a hedge shrub at work. They built a large comb, about 25 inches long and maybe 12 wide. They never bothered us, stayed 2 years and then moved on.

I was on a motorcycle when I had an encounter with a swarm crossing a highway. I could see the cloud of bees before I hit it, but I didn't know what they were until I was in the middle of them. I got hit about a dozen times (I was wearing a helmet and faceshield). I stopped to make sure none were trapped in pockets at the collar or anywhere else they could get past my clothing. No stings but I was somewhat unnerved.

Man, I would have had to pull over to change my pants after something like that! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
