Britt Allcroft is a name most of you with children probably know, but can't quite place in your memory. She's the creator of the Thomas the Tank Engine television series, it always said "Created by Britt Allcroft" in the opening credits of each episode. She has died at 81.

The show is based on Reverend Wilbert Awdry's Railway Series books, but credit for creating the TV series and phenomenon that followed goes to her.

My son was a total Thomas fanatic at ages 1 - 3, I think most of his first words came from learning the theme song, and came with a British accent from so many hours of that show playing in our house.

He was a very unusual movie writer/director. Years ago we discovered "Eraserhead", I believe one of his first films...you either loved or couldn't watch his movies, they were so way-way "out there". To me his movies were more about emotion, dream-like and controversial. "Twin Peaks" was probably his most famous long running series. Everyone would enjoy and should see "Straight Story".
He was 78.

Never knew him as a baseball player, but my dad liked him, so I liked him (and you have to admit, it's pretty easy to like a guy who could poke fun of himself).

That "I must be in the front row" line lived for years after and used by everyone. I loved it. I never followed baseball, but the Miller commercial was everywhere.
