I had a guy on another forum build me a digital temp thermo with a thermocouple probe I installed in the flue yesterday and also checked for birds/nests. It has adjustable settings w/an alarm for over fire conditions. I have it set to sound at 1,000 degrees and I think it's a great idea. We tend to get distracted and leave a primary or even a door cracked open when getting stoves up to temp which can cause a runaway real quick. Headed up there now to build the first fire of the season.
and also checked for birds/nests.

Brings back memories...We had a cap on our chimney so I never gave it a thought and lit our first fire of the year...The fire was beautiful for a few minutes and then Chimney Sweeps on fire started flying down from the flue into the fireplace....My Mrs. and Son were there and it was sickening...I jumped up and put 2 of them out of their misery the other 2 burned up....I have no idea how they got in there with a Chimney cap with screen around it ...but they did...that has been a few years ago but I still remember it...My Mrs and Son were worried about the birds...I was worried one , on fire , would fly over the screen and into the house...

I have seen some nice door pulls made from RR spikes. Send me a picture of what you want. I like the lockset. Pretty cool.

It was supposed to be fair weather and overnight they changed it to rain all day. might as well throw a dart at a board. I got half of the purlins up after before dark last night. grrrrrr

A flaming bird could do some serious damage bouncing around in the house. That reminds me of a story I read...urban legend maybe. A guy was burning leaves/branches in his yard. Picked up something that had a mouse in it so he threw it into the fire. Burning mouse ran out of fire through front door into house....house burned down.

Mike, next time you swing by we can take a look at it...I have a "tub 'O" RR spikes and horseshoes for parts.

There are enough of those burning animal stories to make one or two of them probably true. I think the physics of it would be really suspect, burning hair is probably gone pretty quick, leaving only flesh. Without a flamable on it there is too much moisture in the system to keep it burning. But still, never say never.

A flue incident we actually had:
My daughter called me in a panic as she had a bird in the fireplace.
I was able to capture and release it using a fish net. After washing the soot off as we released it, it turned out to be a beautiful wood duck.
Wood ducks are a rarity amongst the duck family in that they nest in the hollows of trees.
We guessed he (she) thought it had discovered a nice cosy warm hollow tree to nest in.

Brandi yes that's county blacktop...is this better?(vintage 10 min ago):

Wow, you can barely see the house. I guess I am not that neighborly, as I wouldn't want my stuff out near the road like that. Around here, it's better out of sight!
hugs, Brandi

I remember you putting your wood burner in the basement, and wondered if it had a fan to circulate the heat?

Today was rainy and chilly, so I burned the first fire of the fall , all day...the stove is rather small, and would remind you of a little heater in a caboose. After it gets going it does keep the kitchen warm, but the rest of the cabin stays cool......This year for the first time, I aimed the eight inch fan at it , on the floor, and amazingly it kept the entire house rather hot....Stupid I didn`t do that twenty years ago :) Tony

M7, I've said it before (and so have others), but wanted to say it again; you've done an awesome job on your cabin. Your craftmanship and creativity are outstanding. Very impressive.

Thanks TS...not bad for a neanderthal eh?:D

Brandi being on the road was not my first choice. But the location of the quonset was one of the only high & dry places in this bottom to put it. I have cameras there and more to come. Since we are "moving on up" a security system is going in there and in the log house. We only average a car an hour, but it sure has been hard on the animals. Getting off the road and up where it's private and safe is just a tremendous relief.

Tony, no fans or registers(holes in floor) yet. I am going to wait and see how much heat we get up top once the stove has a chance to heat everything up....it's going to take a few days. When I fired it up the house was at 62 degrees, next day it was at 65 and today it's at 68. With no stairway(yet) to the basement heat transfer is slow. A stairway will change everything so it will be a big learning curve. I have not had time to cut firewood, so that is on the agenda this week....I have two standing dead oaks and one beech all over dead 3 years old. These should get me through the winter.
