Raining :umbrella-guy: here and only 15C or 59F at 5:43PM Pacific time.
Just put the wood stove on  for a bit of warmth :fire:.
Man I would hate to have the heat you have, hope some cooler weather gets there soon. :)

Very hot and getting hotter. Worse is that we had no winter. My wife just called to say the once beautiful garden has been overrun with grasshoppers, stink bugs, beetles and other. The things that eat them can not keep up.
We are staying organic and trying hard, but it looks like nothing will survive.
Between the government and weather this is a rough period!
I am sorry for those flooded and burned out...that makes what is happening to us seem small.

Suppose to be about 108 here today and we are in an exreme drought according to the weather center.

Yes -- Missouri had a higher temperature and lower humidity than Arizona yesterday and same is predicted for today. All the highway signs say extreme fire danger. Very unusual.

Yeah, it is pretty bad all the way across a pretty wide area in MO. There is a no burn order, fireworks displays are being cancelled and the extreme heat is expected for a couple or more days then still in the high 90's. The crops are really suffering. I didn't think our renters had planted wheat beans as I couldn't see any coming up, no till, until my wife and I got out into the field and saw a few scraggly plants had made it up; going to be a really poor crop this year in corn and beans.

Makes me glad I don't live in the "good old days". Just think we could be in a one room cabin with our wife cooking on a fireplace or wood stove. Thank God for AC.

Amen to that although I did live in the good old days and remember when we upgraded to a coal stove. One of my jobs was to go out to the coal pile in our back yard and fill the bucket to sit by the stove. I have no fondness of much in the good ole days and love my AC.

We are in good shape here though compared to the folks out west; thoughts are with them.

Thanks for the reach-out and thoughts, Triple R and others.

The High Park fire within a few miles of our home is about 85% contained, and is "yesterday's news" as far as most of the country is concerned. For those affected by it (over 250 homes burned and over 125 square miles!), it's good to send out some prayers. Thankfully, we had a couple cloudbursts in the past few days that allowed them to get on top of this fire. However, those same storms put some lightning over by Boulder, and started a fire there right near the city... they got on top of that one quickly.

"Today's news" is the Waldo Fire, down near Colorado Springs. While a lot smaller in total area than the High Park fire, it went right through some neighborhoods on the edge of the city (the woodland/urban edge). Over 350 homes. President Obama will be there today. I was impressed to hear that they called ahead, to make sure their arrival would not disrupt the fire efforts (i.e. for police escort, etc.) Our governor assured him it was welcome. Also welcome are the Federal disaster dollars to help this. For us here in Colorado, this is the type of natural disaster we get (sometimes not naturally caused, but most of the recent ones have been lightning); in the southeast, it's hurricanes, in midwest, tornadoes, some places it's floods (flash floods here too). For us, it's wildfires. Temps have been hovering around 100 F for several weeks, with humidity dropping to the single digits at the height of each day.

Thanks to all for prayers and support.

P.S. I also remember a touch of the good old days, when our house had a coal chute/bin, and a pile of clinkers out back. Once, me and my 5 brothers and sisters got accidentally locked out, and no parents at home (in the 60's; eldest was 11 and watching the rest of us, no problem :) ). I was 3. But kids are creative.... I was small enough to send in by the coal chute, and old enough to know how to unlock the door from the inside, so in I went, and let the rest in by the front door! Not sure if my parents even know about that one.:laughing::laughing:

It is 100 deg now in the shade....supposed to go to 105 deg...here today..that means about 115 in the open pasture...no rain...I don't know what rain looks like anymore....we are in a severe drought and have been for a few years.

OK...now it is 3:36 Eastern time and it is 107 deg on our thermometer...it is hot..add 15 degrees for the middle of the pasture...and my hay was cut today but he had a cab and A/C....

Keep us posted, oftentimes we get wrapped up in our own difficulties and neglect to think of those in worse shape. There are fires out west and record flooding in Florida and elsewhere.

I hope you will understand, I am still going to complain a bit about the heat here.:eek:

Lot of old farmhouses around here had a "summer kitchen" in a separate building to keep heat out of the living spaces. I sure can understand why.

We cut some hay yesterday and are baling it this afternoon (square bales). We're going to start hauling at about 4:00, so it should be right about 104. It should make for a real good time. Luckily it's only about 500 bales.

I have been having to feed my cows for about a month until we turned them into a hayfield we finished last week - it has enough stubble to last them for a week or so (maybe). After that, I'll be feeding again.

At my workplace, we took a quick tour through the plant today and our lowest temperature was 102 and it was up to 125 in some areas of the facility - whoof.

Good luck and take care.

Thanks for the laughs rtimgray.

And more seriously, sorry about the hay situation that so many are facing. Same here in Colorado: Too hot, no precipitation, low to no hay yields. First cutting at our neighbor's was less than half of usual, and they're not sure they'll even get a second cutting. And hay has gotten pricier.

We are only dealing with the heat.. TV station says it's 102* My thermometer shows 115* @ 5:25 pm CT. my thoughts are with those that are dealing with the fires & the heat & losses

You know, I am finally understanding what a "dry heat" is. We've been having 102F to 108F highs, and I've been out in it a lot, and I can tell you - I've been hotter. We are experiencing an unusual lack of moisture, but I guess that is leading to very low humidity levels. It's still hot, but it's not that smothering feeling I've felt before.

I'm cutting some more hay tommorrow to try to make up for the shortfall - hopefully another 800 to 1,000 bales (the field usually makes upwards of 1,500 in a good year).

Good luck and take care.

Over 100 F the last few days here and supposed to continue. The title to this thread reminded me of the song The race is on (George Jones)

Here are some lyrics I've come up with so far.

This is sung to George Jones song "Race is on"

The heat is on and out comes the air conditioning,
I expect a black out.

Well I'm still thinking of lyrics for the song. Anyone want to add to the lyrics, I might sing and post it to youtube. I'll get the backing tracks to "the race is on" and sing it to that.
