The $4.00 fix

Have a 4110 with the mid mounted 60" mower. When I first used it the top belt covers rattled when cutting grass. Called the dealer... he stated the covers should not be fastened down and the bolts sticking through the covers were just guides. Called JD customer service. They told me the same information, no fasteners required. Went to the local hardware store and bought the metric nuts and some washers. Now it runs quiet like it should. Why would they sell a $2000.00 mower and tell the customer it is supposed to bang around like a hammer beating a wash pan with todays engineering? My other mmm's had bolted down covers. I bet the cost of the metric fasteners must have had a dramatic impact on their projected profit margin.

My 60" MMM came with the nuts to bolt the covers, but I still had the rattling problem...Seemed to be coming from the front of the guards where the clamps are. So I put a thin strip of sticky backed weatherstrip foam on the deck where the guards contact, and that solved the rattling noise for me.

Why would JD manufacture a mower without bolts? Probably because the people designing the equipment sit behind desks and never get out in the field to actually operate the units. Then they tend to discount or totally ignore the feedback from field personnel. And when customers like us provide feedback, the response from the designers/engineers is, "What could they possibly know?" Besides, when they say "It's not the money," it's the money!
