Didn't they all have a wooden knob for cranking? The last time I used one of those was probably my 1956 Mercury. I thought those 3 legged jacks were a really great invention in their day.

Bird,
The one in the picture has a steel knob.
Wood, for the youngsters on here, is the stuff inside the tree bark in the woods. :D
Before plastic, many, many beautiful and/or functional things were made from it... Even some airplanes:dance1:

Hey pacerron, we are here! Just got my two stitches out, walking without crutches. Rain is forecasted for the weekend and I have seen several fertilizer trailers trying to put out the last load of the year - for either a late hay cut or a good winter cow grazing pasture. Lots of Hay was cut this week with all the sunshine and the previous two weekends of rain. My goat weed/dove weed is a bumper crop in the sandy soil and in the black land the broom-weed is starting to bloom. Mesquite flour is gluten free, not that I care, but there might be a market for it, and I will have 30 acres of pods in the spring. I'll have to research this a bit more..... It's sunny right now, need to get outside.........

I remember seeing my Uncle's using one on a truck they were swapping engines on.

Just busy here, as well as bumping data limit for this billing cycle.

jinman; If those gas companies weren't making so much money at the expense of others, they might not be paying for all of those tickets. Enjoy the game, and the time with the family. That is what it is all about!

I will.
Today I did the FG19 exercise - hoeing the garden - It raised my HR sufficiently.

Bird,
As we get older they say we really don't forget anything; it is just that we have so many lifetime experiences tucked away in many, many drawers in our brain, that we can't remember which drawer it is in.
If that be the case, I wonder why we can remember things from 50-60 years ago, but can't remember why we went to the other end of the room when we get there?

With that as a lead in, I did find the red screw jack this afternoon, within 3 feet of the other one. My orchid lady had covered it with some bags of bark she uses for her orchids. It is in fact, red, and does have a wooden knob.
Even has the tag with instructions from Allstate. When I was a kid the Sears store had an Allstate
Auto/Farm store annex. Us city kids loved to go there and see all the stuff used in small farming in those days.
I had an uncle that had some acreage that he raised chickens, hogs, sweet corn, field corn, strawberries, etc. on, and I loved to go down there and help him. Especially when I got big enough to run the David Bradley 2 wheel tractor. That was a lot more fun than planting the corn with a hand planter that was like a post hole digger with seeds on one side and fertilizer on the other. After a couple acres of planting that way, even a young strong kid could get pretty tired.

This red screw jack is the one I bought for the 57 Merc, which weighed a ton. My wife used to call it "The Tank" It would go through fresh snow drifts headlight high without even downshifting.
In the later years the name was changed to "The Blue Mist"
I'm sure you remember the road draft tubes that could really puff some smoke from old engine blow-by.
Finished the beautiful day outside by topping up the monster battery in my old Ford tractor and checking a few other things on it, getting ready for winter.
Having smaller batteries with high cranking output sure has been a technological improvement. That big battery is a real challenge to take out. Luckily, this is only the third battery in 20+ years.

Kyle;

We have a bunch to push down here in Colorado County also. Most very big and very dead. Was almost caught up from the 2011 drought and here we go again. Glad we have big tractor and grapple.

Good luck.

It was a wonderful day in my neighborhood with no reported cases of a drive by,, Unless you count the paper boy/girl/man/woman,, Someone threw a paper.. I read it while I had my morning coffee.. no sugar or cream thank you..
Off to the land or barn with intend of mowing a few more acres,, loaded up all my equipment, ice crest, lunch,, ear plugs,, Two gates later I was mowing.. I have a cab of my tractor but I like to wear ear plugs because I like to sing and I don’t want to hear what I sound like..
Anyway I had been mowing for about three hours when I noticed one of my sons driven across the pasture,, Stopped and talked for a minute or two.. Come on over for a fish fry on Sunday.. Free beer and wine for the kids and milk and soft drinks for Us.. Understood the humor,, Okay will be there.. Maybe
Back on the tractor more mowing needed,, Singing yes Jesus loves me.. anyway that what it sounded like,, I was wearing hearing protection,, After about four more rounds,, about mile round trip.. I noticed I must have hit some thick grass cause the engine started to sound tight.. No worry been there before.. I would have looked back in the rearview mirror,, but one got knocked off the day before and the other had got knocked sideway on the last tree encountered,, Got to the end of the role and as I was making my round I noticed that someone must have brought a tiller.. I decided to stop and look back.. The wheel on the mower had fell off.. Ok Lordy where the wheel.:confused3:. also the top piece of the three point hook up had come loose.. I was dragging the mower and it was short cutting the field.. it looked nice,, but to short for a pasture..
So tomorrow I will rebuild the mower,, new wheel bearings and bolts,, think I will add a washer to the four bolts that hold the gear box to the deck some slop in it.. couple of hours at the most if I had a new impact gun.. on sale at Lowes,, Yes dear it was on sale.:). Lou

Speaking of mower gear box mounting and "taildragger wheels" I thought I had some fine paint scratches, in weird places on my gearbox mount this spring. Turned out to be cracks in the plate.
After watching them grow for a while I decided I better try to weld them.
During the clean up of grass on the mower and in the belt carrier, so I wouldn't have a grass fire as well, I was astonished to find one of the 4 wheel mounts to be cracking/pulling away from the deck. Normally it is covered by wheel height adjustment plates and lots of grass so is not obvious unless you really do a walk around, and a little cleanup.
Any of you with a mower like this or even a bush hog type with one rear wheel, might want to look yours over.
Ron
