Texas Fall/Winter thread!

Brandi,,, One pair tree died.. so I had to cut the other one down.. but mostly dove ness in the pear tree,, But we always had a nice Christmas Dove dinner with pears.. Can you said.. hum hum.. pass the dove pie and roasted pears.

Have you ever ate Chicken Enchilada with Dove or Quail substituted for Chicken? ? Both are..........YUMMY!

Dad always told me, while we were dove hunting, that dove loved goatweed. So break out the plow and disc and advertise for dove day hunting!

Yep sure have.. didn't like the dove enchilada as well as the duck,, I think I had Quail but don't remember for sure,:confused3:, I like Quail a lot more than duck or dove.. but I like chicken better than Quail.. but then again I like a HAMburger made with beef, I am a rancher.

Brandi, We call the same plant Dove Weed around here.
My Dad went to UT. My DW also went to UT after we were married. So UT actually got some of MY hard earned money.
With you grand kids in Austin.......you might have to change school support in 17 years.

Hehehe. I already have learned to deal with that. My daughter got accepted to UT. I asked her to apply to A&M to show her Grandpa she was good enough to go to A&M. She did. But went to UT and graduated in '07. I had a house divided sticker on my old truck.......half in maroon, half in orange. UT is a good school and has an beautiful campus. It's a good old school rivalry and it is sad A&M and UT quit playing each other. But you can't beat traditions. With that said............Gig'em, Aggies. Whoop!

Does anyone else have lots of stands of Maximilian Sunflowers alongside their highways? The road between Sunset and Wichita Falls is just dotted with showy groves of Maximilians with blooms all up and down their 8-10' stalks. Regular wild sunflowers pale by comparison to the Maximilians. Since I had surgery in Wichita Falls this morning, my wife drove home and I got to gaze around and enjoy the flowers like I don't normally do when driving. For fall, Maximilians are my favorite flowers.

There was an article in recent Texas Farm Bureau paper about some Texas farmers growing sunflowers as a cash crop.

Wonder if goat weed could become a cash crop? Hmmmmm? Got lots of GW in areas where I dug up large stands of Yaupon, pushed over dead trees and previous burn pile areas. Not many dove though?

This was one of those days.. When all is not right with Lou world.. Got up okay.. no problem in the shower,, or reading the paper,, not even the crossword was much of a problem.. Got to the barn or the land as I like to call it.. Fired my tractor up sounded a little off tone.. but cool morning figured it was cold..
Now this is a Montana 5740c.. that I know little about plus it didn't come with a manual.. But it green so it can't be that hard to fix.. Got to the back pasture about mile from the barn and the tractor shut down.. Just like it lost fuel.. was one of the those slow shutdown.. Starts right back up run for two sceonds.. shutdown.. fuel problem,, Got out to get the tool box and remember I don't have a tool box on this tractor.. it's in the gator or truck or the other tractor.. Now a mile is not a long way if you are 29 and in good shape..
I cut thru the trees save myself maybe fifty feet.. it was enjoyable walking back,, trees are turning,, lots of birds,, cows watched me as I watched the birds.. lot of dove nesting.. plus red bird, blue jays,, and a large red headed woodpecker..
Got to the barn, got the gator with tools,, hook on to the small trailer with air compressor and welding machine and generator.. Got back to the tractor and started to work on the fuel system.. found the problem after taking the system apart.. algae in the a little screen on the income line from the fuel tank to the pump.. flew the system out.. This was a three hours job.. it nice to be retired and have nothing to do other than find something.. it nice when something find you..
It was a nice cool day didn't work up a sweat,, ate lunch in the gator before parking it by the water tank,, I will walk out in the morning and get it.. before I start my mowing.. Didn't get as much done as I would have liked but I understand the entire fuel system on a Montana 5740C now.. Lou

Same with sand / grass burrs. They showed up when the rain started a couple of weeks ago. What's with that?

This thread, which is my favorite, has been very inactive for a couple days?
I thought perhaps it was out of respect for Jinman and waiting for him to make a post here.
I see from looking around this morning that he did do his chemo therapy as scheduled and was very active on other threads later in the day and evening yesterday:thumbsup: although he still hasn't posted on this thread.
Hopefully, no one else has had any problems, but just been busy....

My tractors are used to get work done, so don't get the wash/wax spit shine, ever, that some folks like to do.
I did change the lubes and filters as needed, and yesterday after mowing did the fall front end blow out with an air hose. I was happy to find the air filter elements are still in great shape and all the dirt was just on the outer one.

Now if I can find where my spouting clean out girl is hiding, I'm ready to give her a lift.

Bird, I did find an old tripod screw jack in the barn. It must have been my Dad's as I recall mine was red and had a wood turned cranking knob. Must be in the other barn. I used to use it on my old 1957 Merc. Don't think I'll try it on the plastic hood of the Deere though.

PUHLEEZE! Don't anyone show me respect by not posting.

I don't feel the need to post daily here and try not to duplicate what I've posted in other threads.

But since you asked. . . MY grandson who lives with us is all excited about going to a TCU football game tomorrow at Amon Carter Field in Fort Worth. It's an outing for kids in the sports program. A local gas drilling company is sponsoring the trip, so it is not coming out of tax dollars. The company gave all the attendees a TCU purple t-shirt with the Devon Energy company logo on it. I suspect they need all the good will they can get. Also, my oldest grandson who is in the USAF is coming tomorrow afternoon for a visit. I'm so happy it won't be 100 F+ outside. It should make a really pleasant visit even if it rains a bit as expected.

How's that, Ron? No big activities in the garden nor working on my tractors. I'm not even flood watering my end of the county.:laughing:

Didn't they all have a wooden knob for cranking? The last time I used one of those was probably my 1956 Mercury. I thought those 3 legged jacks were a really great invention in their day.
