TESLA Electric Truck?

While that is impressive I think technology is moving past this concept. Change in battery technology will go on for years to come.

Tesla's Quest for Better Batteries - YouTube

There seems to be a strong desire by Tesla to get away from Panasonic battery dependency. If Tesla pulls off the Maxwell technology that it now owns the other makers may be stuck with dated battery technology.

One factor about Tesla that I think escapes the general public is they are patenting their EV building technology. At some point Telsa patents may be worth more the cars they sell to their cash flows down the road.

Telsa is not a new car company but a new breed of high tech companies. Musk's long range space living plans will use much of the technology he is creating and testing today in his cars and trucks.

Seldom are things as though they may seem.
Actually, they have been adopting open source type principles for their intellectual property & patents. Basically they think that they cant satisfy enough of the market alone, so helping others build the electric market is better than hoarding parents.

While your first link is going on 6 years old what do you think Musk meant/means 'In Good Faith'? Who gets to define 'In Good Faith'

"Tesla will not initiate patent lawsuits against anyone who, in good faith, wants to use our technology."

People do not go to the expense to take out 300 patents when they plan to give the technology to the world for free typically.

Industrial Design the Next Wave of IP

"IP-savvy companies like Tesla are prolific patent filers not just to protect their functional inventions (e.g., compact battery storage, autopilot sensors, etc…) but also on the appearance of their products. Take the example of a charging station. My silver Telsa is charging at a “Leaf” station at Tampa International Airport. This station is somewhat generic in shape and entirely non-distinct. It is functional but conveys no brand association with its manufacturer."

Tesla continues to rack up patents despite Elon Musk's supposed distaste for patents - IPWatchdog.com | Patents & Patent Law

"Any shareholder in a Musk-related company should be very concerned if Musk truly thinks that patents invite lawsuits yet he doesn’t stop his companies from obtaining patents. Or, what’s more likely the case, Musk is trying to gain a lot of political goodwill during a time when the federal government has become very anti-patent. Such positioning helps to improve Musk’s profile to the point where government subsidy helps to prop up his billionaire net worth."

This is 2 years old, slightly off topic but an electric bicycle built by a crazy Englishman.
12 minutes, first 9 how he made it...but watch last 3 minutes or so

Feel free to post any EV info that may not directly apply to the Tesla electric truck to the generic EV thread below is you wish.

The E bike is an EV that is getting a lot of attention. A bike that is going faster than the general public mentally expects is a risk. This is especially a Telsa problem but also applies to most EV's taking off from stop lights as the lead car. Some pulling out 100 foot up the street know they are safe to go even if the light has just turned green but an EV can be on top of them in a flash without burning rubber or making any sound that they can hear with the windows closed. Driving an EV requires thinking ahead like riding a motorcycle requires.

What are the various combinations of Model 3 variants and suitable high power home chargers?

Model 3 | Tesla

First, there are no "home chargers" only connectors known as EVSE, Electric Vehicle Service Equipment. The AC charger is built into the car. The EVSE is fundamentally an extension cord with extraordinary safety measures added. Provides a signal to the vehicle indicating how much current one is allowed to draw. Power is only switched on only after the vehicle is connected. In addition to GFI if excess current is drawn the EVSE will shut off.

The base model "Standard Plus" has a 7.6kW (32A) onboard charger for AC and can charge at 100kW from a DC Supercharger. The Long Range AWD and Performance models have 11.5kW (48A) AC chargers and can charge up to 250kW at a suitable Supercharger. Most Superchargers are older models "only" capable of 150kW. 150kW is over 3x the power of a typical 200A home service.

For AC charging the power is regulated by the onboard charger. For DC charging a communications link from vehicle instructs the charger how much to give. The rate slows as battery fills.

To my knowledge no one has taken Musk up on the offer. However filing (and being issued) a patent is the best way to prevent someone else from claiming they invented it then demanding penalties and royalties from you. Dish got screwed over by Tivo exactly that way. Dish had a PVR years before Tivo, based on a Microsoft platform.

Musk is said to have defined "in good faith" as mutual sharing of patent portfolios. This kind of thing is common in industry, but somehow it is newsworthy when Musk says.

Can you charge with just a regular extension cord from a 110 volt outlet. I always assumed you can’t but don’t know.

Yes but it charges slowly. See attached. In the picture the charge limit is set to about 215 miles, currently 158, yet estimates another 16 hours remain to reach 215. On 240VAC @ 40A it would be charging 29 MPH, not the 4 MPH shown. Screenshot of the Tesla app while my car charges.

Reading posts over in the ChevyBolt forum - a site similar to here - several posters say their Bolt is used only for daily commuting, with a different car for road trips. So they have found charging from a simple extension cord overnight that provides 4 miles for each hour of charge, works fine and they never got around to putting in the dedicated charging outlet they had thought they would need.

Others engage an electrician to extend their 240v clothes dryer circuit out to where they can charge from that - probably a better plan for most people.

Doesn't everybody on here have a 50 amp welder outlet?

I still think the part about the electric vehicle conversion that might work best for us is solar panels and chargers made in the USA and when not charging our electric vehicles, feeding the electric grid to be distributed to others in need and giving us a credit as investors for doing so. Anytime a fossil fuel is used defeats the purpose with the use of electric vehicles of any kind. Using any sconce of energy other than something that is renewable will not make the conversion worth wile and violate the basic thing we learned in Jr. High School science class, converting energy results in a loss. We want less carbon emissions, use a scarce that doesn't cause it. Hydro, solar, wind. Build these products here, provide incentives to do so. Generate new jobs and a economic benefit for this country making a investment in the future of the world. Tesla already has made some great decisions with their giant factory in northern Nevada to support their electric vehicles. Just one more step is required for them to capture the domestic solar panel market by producing high quality solar panels here in this country generating not only power, but profits by not having to pay all of that shipping from china.
