Is there such a thing?

My wife and daughters are all unmoved by the asertion that our horses have been living outside without a run-in shed etc. for years. Nor are they moved by the thought that even if they had one, no promise they would use it...

It has been cold and wet last couple days and the poor ponies do look pretty sad...

But this is still just the temporary pasture, I'm still clearing land nd have WAY more fence to build so this is NOT where I planned to build the run-in shed...

So here I am hat in hand again beggin for sage advise from all of you TBN'ers far wiser and more enperienced than I am.

Got any good "Temporary" run-in shed ideas you're willing to share with this horse n00b?

Thanks in advance,
David

How many horses do you need shelter for?
How far from "temporary" location to where you want the final shelter to be?
Will it be just shelter... a spot to get out of wind and rain? or will it also be a place to groom, feed, water, tack, store, etc...
I have been down this road before.

Here is my "temp" pasture thread...
http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/projects/222283-temporary-horse-pasture-fencing-advice.html

I have 2 horses now.

I believe I intend only a run-in shed for shelter, but I am thinking about options for tack and maybe some feed etc...

The temp pasture is along the edge of the driveway where I had grass already, the rest of the 5 or so acres is still being cleared and prepped. I really wanted to stop paying boarding and start learning how to be "horse people".

This is all a big giant learning experience for my family.

Horses have been on porperty now for 2 whole weeks...

What ever "run in shed" you build I would avoid sheet metal around the bottom ... I once saw a horse that had kicked his foot threw the lower part and it was ugly from that metal.

Around here there are alot of 3 sided sheds built on skids lined 4' with plywood and a simple roof... it's funny though to see bad weather and the horse's out under the trees ... they seem to only go into them for feed !!!

It's more for bugs and sun protection than cold. You're probably aware that horses are mini heat power plants. Cold and rain doesn't bother them much with a full belly.

However, in the summer when the bugs are harrassing them they will stand under the shelter all day. And that's because the bugs that come out during the heat of the day, do not like to be in the shade and vice versa.

Sorry David ... Boone asked.

Its a little rough on the back ... but it has got me thru a few nights ...

Back on topic ... In the summer months when the bugs are bothering my mules they head under the trees.... of course everyone knows a Mule is much smarter than a horse.
