Moss, so ask your wife if she is going to run outside every time it rains and put the horses in the "shelter". If so then I think a thin tank top will be required:D

I'm gonna tell her YOU said that!

BWAHAHAHAHAHA!

I LOVE IT!

Neighbor built one for his horses. Made the frame out of pipe, then screwed siding to it. It can be easily moved with the tractor if needed.

Metal pipe or plastic pipe?

We were in FL for Christmas and driving towards Gainsville on Hwy40. It was 70 degrees out and partly cloudy. I hear my wife gasp and she points.....I see some poor horse turned out to pasture wearing a heavy quilted blanket. Folks horses stay way healthier if they are left out to grow their own winter coats when it's cold and shed when it's hot. Most health issues come from being cooped up in a stall or barn standing around in their own excrement. D

Different disciplines have different care. Probably a dressage or hunter/jumper horse. Florida is where most spend the winter so they can train and compete year round. The horse is body clipped. The blanket keeps them warm and prevents the coat from growing. We don't clip ours but we do blanket them to prevent a long coat.

David, unless you have small ponies be careful of lightweight or temporary shelters. If the horses get to fighting or just playing they can do themseves and the shelter significant damage. A 800-1000 pound horse is a lot of mass to hit something. Does your vet make housecalls? Moving an injuried horse into the trailer and hauling is not fun.

We had 2 12X12 shelters built last year. Has a 10' back wall, 13' front height. Metal 4"X4" post at the corners set in concrete, metal on the outside with 30 year Kynar paint, and the inside lined 8' high with 2"X8" treated tongue and groove to prevent one from kicking thru to the metal. The corners are all wrapped with metal corner bead. Our warmbloods are 16.2 - 17 hands and weight 1350-1400 pounds.

Spent $5500. Came home today after it started raining and there they are, standing in the rain. Money well spent for the wife is happy. :D

Randy,

That reminds me I need to buy a trailer... And an F-350...

My horses are 14.2 or 14.3, just big enought to qualify as Horses and not ponies. But the next ones will likely be bigger. I want a draft or part draft and we all like the warm bloods.

I am very aware of the mass in motion and the damage it can cause. So I am very wary of temporary structures.

Hopefully the winter remains mild and we can make it through until I can get some clearing done and build a more permanent structure.

I liked the idea of a structure to cover the hay feeder and the horses...

Thanks,
David

Man, following you on these threads is re-living some memories I'd soon forget. Don't get me wrong, I love animals, but - horses - argh!

Money pit.

For your temp shelter, I will not comment on use, or what is best....

Go to your local lumber company.

Buy some 4x4 pressure treated posts, T-111, and lots of 2X4's. Build everything to the dimension of the T-111 4X8 sheet. Go twelve feet high in the back and sixteen high in the front. For a roof, here is where the money is. Get a good metal material.

I have built six or seven, I lost count of these type of run-in's over the years. Simple, inexpensice and easy to deconstruct. I actually moved one, the rest, last I checked were still standing.

Anywhere near the ground, I used pressure treated wood. A post-hole digger, hammer, nails, tape-measure, saw and level was all I used. Built them right out in the field. Mostly, me, myself and I. For the run-in, I went 16' deep and 24' wide.

I'll look for some construction pics when I get back to the farm tonight.

16' high!!! You must have some HUGE horses... I've never seen a run in shed higher than maybe 9' in the front and 8' in the back (I think).

I would VERY MUCH appreciate pictures.

Thank you!

Metal pipe, though I don't know for sure what size. Nothing too heavy I think. He welded up a frame, then used sheet metal screws to hold on the siding and roof. He's had it for a long time, seems to work well.

Who says only the horses use them? :) When I get tired, the CUTS don't make it back home. :)

Serious - Horse do rear up.

Yes they do...
Another reason for a higher roof is you might need to get your tractor inside.
Higher roofs are also cooler down at horse and human level.
