"Temporary" Run-in shed for my horses

I built a 3.25 sided run in shed for the dirt paddock. No shade or trees otherwise. It gets used. This was not lick and a promise shed but it could have been. 4 poles set in gravel. A frame roof with asphault shingles. Shingles may be quieter than a metal roof which means they may be under the shed in a rain storm. An uninsulated metal roof can be loud in a storm. I did walls with OSB on the outside and siding, 3/4" plywood on the inside up to 8'. I need to do anti-bird cloth or something someday. But 4 6x6 poles with the goal of a 12x12 inside dimension means that a few friendly horses can hide from the weather. Two sides with something to act as a windbreak will make you popular with someone. Use screws if you want to quickly take it down later. Gravel not concrete on the poles if you want to pull them up quickly later.

If they fight then of course the shed is not good for some creature.

Metal down low where a horse can kick through is a recipe for a big vet bill.

There was a spot back at far edge of our horse pasture where the fence was about 10yds back in the trees. It was obvious from observing the dirt that the horses liked it there a lot. I built them a VERY simple shelter there by spanning a few medium-sized trees with lumber with tin over it to make a sloped roof. About 10ftx12ft (two horses). No sides at all. They have enjoyed it for years. The woods back behind it provide somewhat of a windbreak. It keeps the rain and snow off. They also have a few favorite cedar trees on the other side of the pasture that they like to use for shelter.

Look at getting a single metal car port (ones seen all over the place. Make sure to get 9ft legs, then screw 2x4's over post to mount your side boards on. Brother did it for his and never had a problem. Enclosed one end and they both get right in there. That way you can move later, or reuse for other project. Only run about $800 plus wood.

Neighbor built one for his horses. Made the frame out of pipe, then screwed siding to it. It can be easily moved with the tractor if needed.

Hmm, temporary shed. Get yourself one of those $800 single wide metal carports. Put it on pneumatic tires (from Harbor Freight, real inexpensive) so you can tow it around your place with your tractor. Depending on the wind conditions, use ground spikes or augers to keep it from sailing off in the breeze.

Good luck.

Here in Colorado we have a company called Port-A-Shed. Here are some examples

As I write this I am looking down the hill at the horses standing in the rain and wind. Ten feet away is a 14X16 shed with one windward back wall and overhead. Plywood double layered on the wall. I knew when I built the cover it would not get used often. Mainly there to cover the round bale feeder. Soon the horses will be moved to another area that has access to a 14x24 lean-to attached to the barn. They will stand out in the weather most of the day anywhere they are.

Exactly. My wife still to this day thinks they need "shelter", but after 5 years she has given up the argument(whoohoo I win:laughing:). Horses are completely water/weather proof and mine only stand under the trees in the middle of summer for shade and to help keep some of the flys off of them.

We were in FL for Christmas and driving towards Gainsville on Hwy40. It was 70 degrees out and partly cloudy. I hear my wife gasp and she points.....I see some poor horse turned out to pasture wearing a heavy quilted blanket. Folks horses stay way healthier if they are left out to grow their own winter coats when it's cold and shed when it's hot. Most health issues come from being cooped up in a stall or barn standing around in their own excrement.

Moss, so ask your wife if she is going to run outside every time it rains and put the horses in the "shelter". If so then I think a thin tank top will be required:D

Well all I can say is my wife must have some candy arsed horses. We built a 12' by 60' lean to off our horse stall barn in a dry lot and the horses use it all the time. Matter fact they can be on lush green patures and have little rain shower pass over and we will here thurndering hooves heading for the lean to. It's really quite commical infact we have a standing joke at my house anytime we here thundering hooves some one will comment "sounds like rains a coming".

I recall one time seeing a hail storm coming across the pasture. So I ran out, arms crossed in front of my face, intending to save the horses from the hail and the mother fargers would not budge. They just turned their butts into the hail and stood there...... I got the snot beaten out of me by the hail.
