TC35D steering won't lock

I know there has been some discussion on the steering lock problems with NH tractors. Mine will not lock and I intend to try and clean around the shock absorber. The problem is I don't know what to look for and what to lube one I get the two black panels off. Can someone tell me what I'm looking for and what to try and lube before I go out and buy a new part?

Following this, loaned my TC35D to a friend and when he brought it back the steering wheel tilt lever was broke (pin was severed). NH says they don't offer a replacement?

The strut is part # 86522914 and if you search amazon or ebay you will have a choice of prices and suppliers. Some members have had success with lubing the small protruding pin at the top of the strut. Tractorblue, you may only need a roll pin driven in where the other was severed. Most farm stores will have a selection if you can match to the broken one. Further info is available on TBN by searching the above part #.

Thanks guys, the shock absorber seems to be working fine. A guy at a NH dealer said the small block may be bad. I will try that for $35.
