I'm looking at 4 WD CUT's for food plot preparation. Currently have 2 acres under tillage. Plan to gey to 10 or 12 acres eventually. Need to pull implements like shallow chisel plow, disc, rotary cutter, landscape rake. Ground has many rocks of all sizes. Will not have $$ for BH, but may be able to buy FEL in addition to others noted above. I've driven the NH TC40A and wanted to drive JD 990, but JD dealer had no 990's in stock. Any thoughts on comparing the 2 CUT's?? Really could use some advice!!

Get draft control. Option for TC40.

Thanks Bob, sounds like good idea. Overall capabilities of both machines reasonably comparable, you think??

I've looked at both... but haven't seen a 990 in person, I just sit on the 790 and imagine it larger. Ergos are definitely better on the TC40. TC 40 has a more powerful loader and I don't think draft control is available on the 990. I believe the 990 is cheaper, but don't have a quote for one yet. The 990 has a more powerful engine and is more of a traditional tractor, as opposed to the modern TC40. It looks like the 990 sits lower to the ground... but it's hard to say without having seen one. I think the 4120 is more of a direct comparison to the TC40. The 4120 comes out on top in that comparison, but costs more.

The TC40 is a 40hp tractor, the older 990 were 40hp, but the newer ones are less hp, I think only 38. You should check up on this.

Yes, JD's 790 and 990 tractors are positioned more as their "no-frills" price fighter tractors. The 790 competes head to head with NH's TC30, but NH does not have a similar type of tractor to go head to head with JD's 990.

I used to compare the TC40 to JD's 4510 or 4610, and NH's TC45 to JD's 4710, but haven't kept up with JD's newer designs to see what the current comparison is.

After being on the TC40, you may be dissapointed in the 990. Do not get me wrong, the 990 is a great no frills tractor, but it would be like test driving a Mustang GT and settling for a Taurus. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

IMHO.

Deere web page says 42hp, Deere spec sheet says 40.4hp. I guess they juiced the injectors back up. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I agree with that statement. And here in TX I was able to buy a TC40A CHEAPER than I could find a best price 990 for. I don't understand why Deere's are so high, at least here. The only 2 I found reasonably priced were the 5103 and the 790.
