Always have been careful about checking by hand as you got a real hot hub or stuck brake you could get a good burn got singed by a bearing once. Carry one of those cheap $30 IR thermometers that will tell you temp within a few degrees and you can actually see if the front to rear tires or brakes are doing their fare share of the work.

This is true.. ! We just had a guy accidentally touch an aluminium air pipe on an engine.... pipe looked just like everything else on the engine. Problem was, it was on the outlet side of the turbo before the CAC.... pipe was about 350-360 degrees!. Hes sporting a nice burn right now!

Re: tire pressure monitoring systems

Thanks for the heads up. I knew these existed, but this thread convinced me to spend the dough for the added safety value on a long trip we'll be undertaking this summer. I looked at the variety of brands/models available, ended up going with the TST 507 with flow through sensors. Now i should upgrade my stems and be good to go.

I keep one of these trailer aids in my truck. Works great with my horse and flatbed dual axle trailers. Lot simpler than another jack.

Here is the best place to store it, right under the spare!

nice setup! what's the weight rating?

Just be careful using a ramp. I have seen it bend a spindle on the good axle due to overloading. It was so bent we could not get the rear bearing off. Had to cut it off then load the trailer on my GN and take it to a fab shop to have the spindle cut off the axle tube and a new one welded in.

not bad...

I have trailer blow outs all the time. I always check pressure and am not overloaded. If you tow a lot it is part of it. We are usually traveling in a convoy of three truck pulling tandem trailers. We have a gas powered air compressor with an impact wrench and a air over hydrauilc 20 ton bottle jack. We can change tires like nascar.

yep.. if you haul alot. no reason to not have needed tools with ya.

I don't carry quite that.. but have plenty on hand to change a tire with no issues.

nice looking 964

Is there any chance that the fender was bend in towards the tire while backing up prior to the trip? I have seen tires blow way down the road after being scribed by an edge of a fender bent in while maneuvering or during loading with equipment. During the trip the flexing of the springs will allow the occasional contact and lead to a failed tire. It is worth thinking about?

I use a set of these on my RV Trailer and my Equipment Trailer plus a set on my F350 Superduty because this system monitors both tire preasure and temperature and gives you a warning if either falls below or above your settings. The Ford system only tells you that on of your tires is showing a pressure problem. Once setup, I mark the sensors with a permanent silver marker so I can transfer them between trailers. I also remove them when not required to save battery power and I can put them back on the same wheel which saves time and trouble of going through a re-setup.
SEMI TRUCK TPMS TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM

If you do go with this TPMS, I would suggest the Talon system that I have because I have heard of some people being disappointed with the HD system.

Since the blowout, I have invested in a infra red temperature gauge, and have paid close attention to tire pressures. I have gotten into the habit of documenting my loaded, tied down trailer loads with photo's taken with my iPhone. The thought of pre-existent fender damage is a reasonable consideration, but there was no pre existent damage to the trailer. Since earning my pilots rating back in the 80's, my preflight inspection walk arounds include my vehicles and trailers!

My tire temps have all been within a couple degrees. I have even started checking the truck tires out of curiosity! There are few things around my home that I or my kids don't know the temperature of since getting the lazer guided infrared temperature gauge!

The 964 was in route to service for a failed distributer belt, and fortunately recieved no damage from the trip and blow out of the trailer tire.

I found this 964 in Chicago 6 years ago with 39k miles, still less than 60k ! Runs and looks like new !

You should also pay attention to your valve stems. Check for cracks and the stem feeling hard, like it's dried out. Most tire shops will just cut them off when changing tires because the natural rubber ones dry rot and will fail. Many of the steel trailer wheels come from China with low quality valve stems. A few years ago Tech International sold up to 30 million valve stems under their Dill brand that had to be recalled. Tech is a US based company that has been in the tire repair business for about 70 years. As a kid I can remember getting old truck tire inner tubes to float down rivers that had Tech 2 Way patches on them. If a well respected company could get suckered in then anyone can.
