To add to my earlier post about using pipe, instead of drilling into the existing posts, you could always gets some floor flanges and screw them into the tops of those posts. One in galvanized floor flanges at Lowes are $13.68 each. It's more money, and more time, so I understand wanting to use what you have, but it's an easy option if the chain idea doesn't work for you.
