The tack on my tractor has quit working. Would like to replace it with a non dealer part.

Any thoughts or ideas??

You could "hook up" a bicycle "ped-o-meter" to just about anything that goes around with the engine.

Some "calibration may be required depending on where the pick up is placed, but those little "readers" have a lot of features.

I might not choose to go this route, but they are not expensive.

They make a diesel tach, or do like CalG suggested and buy a bike speedometer and do a search for the right tire size to have it display RPMs.

I have a Kubota F2680 out front diesel mower that did not come with a tachometer. I researched and decided that for my situation a Tiny Tach Diesel might be the answer. I ordered one and am well pleased with it. It works by reading pulses on one of the fuel injector lines. It has 3 work timers. I can't figure out how to read the total accumulated hour but really don't care as my mower has a factory hour meter on it. They are kinda expensive as I think I paid about $110.00 for it but the tach seems spot on.
I ordered it directly from Tiny Tach but you can find them on E-bay also. If you order one you need to make sure that you measure the diameter of your particular line. They come in 1/4 inch and 6 and 7 millimeter fuel line size, i think. The pick up unit has to be fastened tightly around the line so size is important.

Any decent pickup truck should work for that.
