I'd be willing to be he'd be a lot of time and money ahead by just selling it and buying another with a diesel engine. The engine alone is probably going to cost $2K.

The engine is the 1st step, he'll have to change also the drive gears as the diesel will put a lot more torque on them. Unless he doesn't work it and wants as a running memory.

Most tractor manufacturers now have a digital parts manual availible to browse on a dealer's website. There you can look and see if there were different transmissions, clutch disks, front axle brackets, hoods, radiators etc. for the gas vs diesel models. It may end up being a huge project if there are lots of differences between the two (besides just the engine).

I know how special such a tractor can be- I inherited my great grandfather's tractor (1943 Case SC)

I think....? Maybe. ...???
I have convinced him. To just overhaul /restore his grandpa's tractor.
That continental engine should last him the rest of his life, just take care of it.

That makes the most sense. Those are good engines and can be kept running virtually forever with minimal effort.

G'day not sure with a 65 but I would guess it should bolt straight up I can't see massey having different g/boxes/final drives for the 2 different engines. It would make it a cheaper engine to run and properly serviced will go for a long time. What engine has he found to go in it?

Peabody,
If the gas engine is running, I too, think your friend might be better off trying to sell the tractor and applying the money to the cost of one with a diesel. If he has found a really good buy on a Pearkins, then the engine swap might be a good idea.

GManBart,
I like the word definitions you have at the end of your post. When I used a desktop, I had ones for loose and lose taped to the monitor.
