Surveillance cameras?

I would not have tought for $200 you could have got anything good!

Also many make fun of my pistol i keep in the table and ride in the truck if im carring one, but its a Hi-Point 9mm. I bought it in college like 8 yrs ago. Purpose, if it gets stolen they did not get an expensive gun. Or if the house is broken into the guns should be in my safe yet its in the bedside table ready. If im not there and they steal it. Again i did not loose some fancy SS 1911 or some fancy kimber or S&w or Glock that i paid $800 for. I have never had it hang up so hopefully at the time i or my wife have to ever use it it will go bang! But like i said i have not had it hang up. I really only bought it for this purpose so i probably havent shot 150 rounds through it, but i dont remember a jam. It hadnt been shot in years untill the neighbor called my wife (who works at a vet, and they know i have guns) late while i was out of town to tell themthat their dog had impailed itself on a T-post and bring a gun as they did not have any bullets for their shotgun (what good is it then?). She got there and the wife as her husband was also out of town dispatched the suffering pooch with 2 rounds from said gun, no problem.

Sorry to here you were robbed. I was rob when I started building, they had a guy that followed cement truck to job sites. The idea being that he could bird dog the site. It took awhile to feel OK at the property again. One guy down the road was rob three times while he was attempting to build his retirement home. I put in an alarm system and have not had trouble since. I did not get the cameras. My neighbor here in the city has cameras but the thieves took the computer that they were hooked up to, go figure.

What is the goal?

The ultimate goal would be to not get robbed again! I guess when we were thinking about cameras, our thought was that it would have at least shown the make/model of the vehicle, maybe a plate and maybe a face that the police could have used. Maybe that would have made them a little more interested in doing something about it because as it was I felt like they provided nothing for us other than a report to file to the insurance.

Another goal is to make my wife feel more safe. She never liked staying out here alone so not that is going to be even worse.

I have also been thinking of some motion sensors similar to something like ADT where you have certain zones you can set. We could place one that covers the living/dining/kitchen area and then in each of the bedrooms. I would also like a driveway alarm. But again with a small budget, I don't know what I can get.

I got a key fob for the alarm system, it works like a car door opener but initiates a call for help. I got this so my wife when alone could set off the alarm from anywhere on the property. She has forgotten now where it is no doubt.

Im thinking an alarm syatem will be several K. But i dont know. Also they have a monthy monotoring fee. But this will not do much better than what you have is that all they do is call the police after it sounds after trying to call you to see if it was false. A criminal can answer the phone and say they had an armfull of groceries and had to set them down before he could disarm it to pase them, before they send the police. And if your like many of us it will take at least 10-20 mins before they show up anyway and they will have everything loaded up and gone! The cameras and just a loud siren that sounds at the house will be a contry best solution. That and big dogs in a fenced yard around the whole house and signs and maybe a camera on a pole pointing at the front drive where it can be seen to make them think you have a powerful system.

First I will say I have some experience with an attempt at making people think they are being watched by video at a public area. Signs were posted with the message they were under surveillance by cameras after a rash of vandalism. This particular area was closed after dark thus the damage was caused during daylight hours. The signs had no didn't slow down anything in this instance. I realize there's a lot of difference between a residence and a public area. I'm just relaying my experience in this case. Other area of concern, poorly placed and dirty cameras. Most videos that I've viewed in an attempt to ID someone by a surveillance video is pretty poor due to the poor placement of the camera. A poor angle of the violating party or a vehicle is not much to work with. You need a face and maybe a lic. plate. something positive and identifying to locate and find the party(s). The majority of the time even though you have a pic there nothing more than a red Ford with 2 young white males. Not much help. Other times the camera lens is so dirty you have not much more than a blurry view of the suspects at a bad angle. Think this decision through and don't skimp. Don't under estimate the criminal mind. Something to think about, When watching the cop type shows how few suspects fail to comply with the order of the Law Enforcement Agencies when they shout out a command followed by " Or we'll send in the Dog"? No one wants to mess with a well trained dog that knows it's business.

Very true on the dog. I've got an Australian Shepherd that sounds ferocious (but is the biggest lover)... I've had many contractors not wanting to enter the house until he is penned up, or on a leash outside. VERY effective.
