Supper, Dinner, or both?

What do you have?
Being from semi rural N. Calif, we have dinner. Never understood "supper".

Dinner is what some consider lunch. But we use these terms interchangeably.

While I was growing up in NC, my mother prepared a main (full) meal that were served at noon and was called "dinner." The evening meal often consisted of leftovers (but with freshly baked biscuits) and was called "supper."

Being from the south I've have always considered a mid day (sit down meal) often the "main" meal of the day...Now on days I just have a sandwich etc...I might say I had "lunch"...so the way I see it the evening meal (for me) will be both dinner and supper...
FWIW...our traditional "dinner time" was when it was ready...usually 12:30-1:00...didn't matter if you got in late (hours even) and ate it cold or re-heated...it was still dinner...!

Dictionary:
Dinner: the chief meal of the day, eaten at evening or midday
Supper: a light evening meal when dinner is taken at midday

There are other renditions but these are the common uses.

I believe a lot of our traditions and sayings are rooted in the former agrarian society when breakfast was taken at 0400, the main meal at noon and a light meal in the evening after dark and the work day was done on the farm.

Wait and our modern urban society will probably coin a whole new set of terms to confuse us senior citizens (like they already have).

As a kid on the Kansas farm back in the fifties, lunch was a 4:00 PM event where someone would bring a snack to the field. It usually consisted of a bologna (except on Friday) sandwich, cookies and Kool-Aid loaded with sugar of course. Dad always had a can of beer wrapped in newspaper to keep it "cold". I can remember Dad giving himself a "pedicure" afterwards with his trusty pocket knife before getting back on the tractor or combine. My stepmother, who was from Louisiana, referred to bologna as "dog meat".

Interesting stuff!

My Grandmother, who is >90 at this point, made all her biscuits for the day in the morning with breakfast . The left overs from dinner were often the majority of supper.

On Sunday she had breakfast and dinner but for supper we were on our own, meaning we ate the left overs from the week.
