I hate to break it to you, but to pull the front cover, you need to drop the front wheel assy. I have no idea what you have to work in, or with, but a cheap engine hoist, setting on a sheet of plywood, if you don't have a shop/garage with a concrete floor, would handle the front wheel assy., and allow you to pull it back far enough to get in to work on it. And some cribbing, or large jack stands to support the rest of it.

Now to get it to a place you can work on it...

Got it open now and found cam gear with center broke out. It was a struggle but it came apart without the wheel assembly coming off.Now if can get the gear changed and back together long enough to get her back into my work area. Most the gaskets didn't survive but if can get her fired up long enough will be doing the whole front end right with new gaskets and all. I hate rework but where it is there wasn't much choice. I will have to get a picture of this to help understand. Do you know the size of the nut on the camshaft? I forgot to measure it when was there. I still need to get the remains off.

Will need to take the manifold off and weld the cracks up as well. She hasn't lead a sheltered life and can stand some TLC. Lots of crude patches been done to her that needs addressed as well.

Had to do a little searching, and won't guarantee it's right. Crossed the part number, and had to go to a spec sheet to find the size. 1.625" or 1-5/8". Sounds big, but spec sheet say's it has a 1" bore. Hope you have a set of jumbo wrenches..!!

Thanks a bunch. I got a 2" but no 1 5/8 I think have a 1 1/2 as well. Sounds like time to buy more toys LOL.

I bought a set of the HF jumbo's 20 years ago, or so. Don't use them that often, but worth their weight when you need one. A 3/4" drive set comes in handy too.

I hear you on that. We moved here last summer and no garage to work in sucks. I hope to remedy that this summer if I ever get my stuff running. Killed my 250 diesel 4 X 4 2 weeks ago and down to the wife's yota and a ranger 4 x4. John Deere lawnmower went on strike as well as the tractor. As they say when it rains it pours. 0619151808[1].jpg This is where she sits but the picture doesn't do justice to the steepness of the hill.

They bad bad luck comes in 3's, so maybe this will be it for a while. That looks like a pretty decent sized cut through that hill. Don't envy you having that steep hill.

Seems a person never has all of the right tools. You can always use just a few more, LOL...

Well parts are finally here. The nut is 1 7/16 at least it was smaller then 1 1/2 LOL Gear is here so hope to tackle it more tomorrow after my Dr appointment. Socket won't fit with cover back as far as it will go. Ordered a wrench and holding remains with a pipe wrench.

Did you check the hydraulic pump, to see if it was locked up..?? Just some speculation, but seems like the small woodruff key on the pump gear would have sheared, before breaking that cam gear.

It appears something caused the cam shaft to stop turning? I would pull the valve cover and check for stuck valves. Old stale gas can cause the valves to stick. something caused the gear to break. changing the broken gear and not correcting the cause is risky. it could also be the oil pump locked up that stopped the cam from turning.
