You can almost see the darkness coming towards you. This did not happen with yesterday ‘ s sunset, except for a small dark band across the bottom right at the horizon. We can see to the East about 70 miles from our elevation, only about 35 miles to the West due to the mountain. I am not sure if this is why it happens....

Could it be the shadows of the mountain rising in the east as the sun goes down in the west?

I guess that is possible, but that ‘ band of darkness ‘ is really far away. You can see the shadow of the mountain locally, areas of sunlight vs shadows, on the high and low spots.

Thanks for the follow up and pics. The east and west views do make me visualize better what you're talking about. I'm kind of scratching my head other than light refraction in a horizontal plane vs a verticle plane, but I'm talking out my butt and have no clue FYI LOL

Perhaps how far south you are and the flatness of the land, but I would think there would be lots of areas in Texas (south of you and just as flat) that get the same occurance. Again, not overly familiar with optics.

this is a sunset from maybe last summer as i'm looking out my living room window. I might not have as much land as most of you or a tractor (yet), but at least I don't have to look right at my neighbor's house.

behind those mountains is the Pacific Ocean.

"red sky at nigh sailor's delight and red sky in the morning sailor's take warning" is what i remember.
