I recently traded for an old subsoiler that the foot had apparently caught something and bent it just enough to start cracking the weld at the front where it is attached to the upright. The foot is about an inch thick piece of steel and I am looking at how I should repair it before I use it to rip roots on trees I am going to push over.
If I heat the foot enough to straighten it, I may weaken it but if I don't straighten it, it may not preform as well as it was designed.
My options are weld as is or heat and straighten then add a flat piece under the foot to reinforce it.
What would you do if you needed this to rip out some roots?
Thanks,
David from Jax

Ifn its like my Tarter subsoiler its just mild steel. I would heat it to straighten then use a grinder to grind a groove in the weld area for better penetration.
I have been thinking about making a v on my shank to pull easier and help through the roots.

I use a box blade type shank in a homemade adapter that goes into a 2" receiver hitch. Very similar set up to what Heavy Hitch sells.

Yes... Just above the pin on digging tooth to the bottom hole in the shank I ground a 90 degree angle on the leading edge of the shank. It does help a lot in cutting roots and general use. It doesn't have to be sharp enough to cut meat, but less blunt than the 3/4" shank width.

Thanks Gentlemen,
I will heat it up, weld it up and sharpen it.
