Why does the pully on top of rear drive keep stripping? Do I need to rebuild the rear axle?

a worn pulley moving around will finally take it's toll on the input shaft. I have seen people take a new pulley and shim it down a bit to get a new place for pulley to bite shaft

The STX38 is a John Deere riding mower with 38" mower deck. The one I had was manual transmission with 1-cyl engine. There is a TBN section for mowers and lawn tractors.

If the input shaft on the final drive is keyed and the key keeps shearing off, first look for a sloppy fit and remedy that. Does the shaft turn easily by hand?

I did change the pully once, and it sheared shortly after, I guess the rear drive might be hanging up. Does it need to be rebuilt? Thoughts? TBN?
