Has anyone used a stump bucket to remove sod, and how did it turn out? I have about 500 square feet of sod to remove and using me FEL bucket with something like a Piranha tooth bar would make the strip too wide. I need more precise control and was wondering if it can be done with a stump bucket. Can the stump bucket cut shallow, horizontally, and under control? I need to remove a strip no wider than 3 feet and with irregular shape in places.

For simply removing or scraping sod a Backhoe with a ditching bucket works well. A ditching bucket with wrist is the bees knees for scraping and grading.
I find it hard to maintain depth control using a tractor FEL especially when the ground is uneven and not level.
If you need to re-use the sod one of these flat spades works best for small areas and gives you better depth control.
I'd rent a sod cutter for doing large areas.

It perhaps wasn't the best solution but it worked for me. Probably only about a third of what you need to remove. About ten years ago I finally got around to pouring a front sidewalk (built the house in 1989 but we always use a different entrance). I used a Mantis mini-tiller to grind up the sod and shoveled it into the loader bucket. Took some effort. Good part was that everything was right here so no rentals, running around or buying anything.
