I don't have tire chains for my tractor. I was wondering if anyone has ever tried 'studding' their tires? Would it be possible to screw in small (1/4") lag screws into the lugs on my rear ag type tires leaving the head exposed to work as studs?

As long as the lag screws weren't long enough to penetrate the tube or inside wall of the tire.

Has this been done? Could it work? We have a lot of ice this year. I usually clear my driveway with a walk behind snow blower but since I have a blade I have been trying it out. It works okay but if I get into ice not so much. The tires have fluid.

Thanks.

1900T_sm.jpgNot very effective but it does help a little. The thing is you need so many screws to make it effective. It's about the same price as the chain-solution. However, if you just need a "little" more grips it might do the trick.

We have done that.
The 'self tapping' types are well hardened as they need to do the drilling as well. They can be had in 1/4" with 7/16 heads so they last a fair while as long as you keep off of pavement and concrete.
With the deep threads on most tractor tires you can use fairly long ones as well for good anchorage. Pre-drill a small (1/8") pilot hole B4 inserting.
Naturally U need to get them a bulk pricing i.e. not a big box store but more like a supplier of industrial fasteners.

When I replaced my JD 850 with a 3320 four years ago I did stud my tires due to the fact that chains would cause clearance problems http://www.maxigripstore.com/....did help on ice but obviously not at all on snow...ended up installing extenders and getting the old reliable chains Canadian Chains [Home]3320 chain rear.jpg P.S. You can also see the studs in this photo

Thanks for the replies. I have a set of too big chains that I bought for $40. They need to be cut down some but I think they will work. I never thought about extending the fenders for extra clearance. Thanks for the heads up.
