Folks -

I seem to have snapped off one of the shear bolts holding the augur to the shaft of my kubota snowblower (B2782 if it matters). I guess I must have been continuing to work for awhile, 'cause the snow was pretty packed in on that side when I stopped.

Anyhow, I can't seem to get the remaining piece of the shear pin out. I can wiggle it around a bit, and rotate it a bit with a little metal pick, but it doesn't seem to want to come out. I tried to whack it with a nail set and a mallet without success.

Anyone with suggestions? I tried to do a search, but either this isn't a common problem or my search technique stinks. I could really use some help, many thanks,

Ken

I've not had that happen before. I use a punch with a diameter the approx same of the shearbolt which ensures the two holes line up exactly which aids in easy extraction. Using a shearbolt as a punch would work as well if lack of hole alignment is the problem.

For shure a drift punch is the correct tool. (I have slightly tapered back about 3/8" on my dedicated drift punch and that helps a lot)

What I found is that soft shear bolts are the cause of that sort of problem.
They fold a bit before shearing due to softer metal and therefore get jammed in place.
I now always use grade 5 for shear bolts and they shear 'clean' when they let go making them easyier to drift out

OK, so I turned on the brute force and managed to whack it out, thanks. I guess I just wanted to have some confirmation that force was the way to go.

Then I went to put in a new one and found that it didn't quite fit, needed to be whacked in. So either something in the hole is scored a bit now (maybe from me continuing to try to blow with the pin busted?), or the shear pins I have are not quite the right size. Perhaps that was why the piece was so hard to get out?

I think it'll work ok now, but if there's anything I should worry about with having to whack a shear pin to get it in place, let me know.

I've ordered some more pins from Tractorsmart, so next time one breaks I can try a different one.

Many thanks for the help.

On my blower the pins are a little snug but tap in easily.
