I know nothing about electricity, so I'm going to ask a stupid question.

My family and I vaction in an old hotel in the western NC mountains. It is actually an old Victorian house converted into an inn. Nothing fancy at all. It has electricy and modern plumbing but that's all. No AC, no TV, no phones, etc.

Well, we usually get this nice corner room with a balcony and big windows and even on hot July days and evenings it is bearable. (Even though it is at the base of the mountains it commonly gets in the high 80's and low 90's.)

But this year we got a room that we are quite familiar with and that has very little cross ventilation and is quite hot.

I have a tiny little window unit that I'd like to take. But if memory serves me, all the wall outlets are two prong and the window unit is a three prong.

All of which is to ask, how can I safely plug in this 3 prong unit into the two prong outlets of this old house?

Assuming that the wiring in the old house is adequate and fused correctly, then there would be no problem with using a $1 adaptor on your a/c plug. Most new smaller a/cs are very energy efficient and as long as there are no other major draws on the circuit everything should be ok.

Thanks man. That's what I was hoping to hear. This unit is real small. And people run hair dryers and such in this place all the time. So hopefully I won't blow a fuse or burn the place down.

I'll only be running it a few hours at night.

Just be sure the condensate drip doesn't flood something below the window. ;)

Good point! I think it will be dripping on the roof....which sometimes leaks, sometimes doesn't in this old place.
