Hi ya
i just had a work out and working on a bale 14 x 16 x 3 foot (other inches) and ya shed was a bit over 8 foot ya would get 420 odd bales in there but would be hard stacking in top ones so maybe closer to 360 .it would also be hard to stack big squares in a carport like that ,i also note no spouting (?)so ya may have to work out a way of getting runoff away from shed
catch ya

Hi ya JDKID!,

I just love that "catch ya"!!!!

I am looking at a carport for a small tractor, not for any hay. Besides, everytime I used to say "Hey, Grandma...", She would reply "Hay is for horses...." /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

I'm somewhat confused... I had mentioned to Rich about maybe making a "lean-to" add-on to his existing barn and possibly a "carport" for equipment purposes... not for hay...

Especially NOT for 50 acres of hay... /w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif/w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

But, I'll see Richie this weekend at an auction and get the scoop.../w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

See ya...

My thoughts exactly John. But I didn't want to say much as I figured you guys had a better plan than I was thinking of especially with you as the braintrust. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

This is a very interesting thread. I'm woefully ignorant on this subject but now I'm curious... are large (6'x5') freestanding round bales that are kept uncovered susceptible to spontaneous combustion or is this mainly a problem for very large stacks of hay like you might see with square bales in a barn?

I received a delivery of few large round bales of poor quality hay (full of stickers) and not being too sure how to dispose of them I've just left them baled to rot in a corner of a field.

All right, maybe you guys will tell me this is a bad idea, but, I thought if I created walls for the carport, out of plywood, and put pallets down as a floor, it wood make a good storage building for hay. Granted it won't have enough storage for 50 acres worth. I also intend to use the loft over my garage. I'm just afraid if I do something wrong, and cause a fire in my barn, I'll kill my goats and horses. If I burn down my garage, insurance will pay for a new one, and no animals would die. In the garage, whatever euipment gets ruined can be replaced with insurance money, but at least nothing will die (other than my tactor, Fergie!). I know this sounds paranoid, but I've learned that if it can happen, it will. And as a novice growing hay, I figure there's a good chance I may do something wrong. So at this point, I don't want to use the hay lofts in my barn. I'm just trying to be extremely careful, until I'm more experienced.

MJS,
Yes this can happen with round bales as well but usually not if they are outside. Round bales were made to go outside and usually just the outer few inches is all that rots. If the hay was put up ok then you have no worries. As far as throwing your bales out in a corner of the field and letting them rot you will probably never have any problems.

Richie, I would be scared if I were you... using my brain? /w3tcompact/icons/tongue.gif

Just don't tell anyone your secret plan on how you're gonna store all 50 acres of hay under that carport...

Just between you and me... how did that go... you're going to condense the hay and then when you're ready to feed... just add water...

I think I understand now... /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif

Re: Manure Spreaders offered...

John, I'm glad you don't work for the CIA!!! This was supposed to be our secret, condensed hay!!! Now everyone on TBN knows about it, and we won't be able to corner the market on our new invention!!!!/w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif We would have been millionaires if you hadn't spilled the beans!!!!/w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif Now we've got to come up with a new idea to get rich!!! What was that idea you had about a 60 horsepower BX???/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gifLet's keep this one under wraps!!!/w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif

Re: Manure Spreaders offered...

Don't worry Richard!! I'm not offended!!! I thought that was a great comment. I'm new to the farming scene, and I need a braintrust. Guys like you and John have taught me alot. I'm very thankful for all your advice, and I wish we lived closer. I'm lucky that John and I live near each other, and he has taken me under his wing, so to speak. Everytime we go to an auction together he teaches me so much, though he won't admit it. And we have a great time, too, at least I do!! A great thing about TBN is making great friends, who would never have known each other without it. In fact John and I realized that we were standing next to each other at at least one auction, before we formally met through TBN. With the help of all you guys, I'll be a farmer yet!!!

We're just busting each other's chops...

But, I still have to see how in heck... he's gonna put 50 acres of hay up...

This is gonna be one doozie of a carport... /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

P.S.- How does a horse laugh? /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Hi ya
yea i was tryin to think how many carports ya were going to buy for hay ,good if ya had 2-300 but 50 odd acres as a bit of a guild stacked 8 high (working on 100 bales per acre and ya would stack alot higher)ya need 3000 square feet could ask a walmart if they have any 50 by 60 carports ya never know what they have ..that aside we looked at a shed for here 36x20 and 12 foot sloping to 10 foot at the back poles and iron cost in kitset 5200 kiwi bucks 2600 USD that would hold bout 1300-1400 ,

Re: Manure Spreaders offered...

Don't laugh about condensing hay, when I was a kid they had a pellet plant down the road. You'd take your alfalfa hay there and they would pelletize it for you and either bag it or truck it over and dump it in your grain bins. Sorry, I can't remember how much hay would make how many sacks of pellets or if they pelletized other types of grass.

Re: Manure Spreaders offered...

I don't know much about it, but my brother showed me a place in Ellensburg, WA, where they take alfafa hay bales and compress them very tightly into small blocks; I think he said less than 1/4 their original size, for shipment overseas.
