Storing gas like I do diesel

I wouldn't store more gasoline than I could burn in a month or 2 at the most. I would also treat it with Stabil as soon as I got it so it doesn't gum up your fuel system. Stabil treated gasoline is supposed to last 6 months to a year if you double dose it, however, I would only buy enough for 2 months use at most.

Likely a 30 gallon steel drum with a hand pump would serve you best but nothing wrong with storing it just like you do diesel, just be careful of any leak.
I personally don't use enough gasoline to justify a separate tank since only my lawnmower, chainsaw and weedeater need gas so I buy it in 3-5gallon containers. My brother in law has a gas JD Gator and a tank of fuel lasts him for weeks. I don't know how much use you will get from your UTV but 5 gallons of fuel goes a long way just putting around the farm. I use my RTV 900 (diesel) daily and a tank of fuel last a month or more.

If I were in the market for a new UTV, I would certainly consider strongly getting a diesel engine if available. I have about 500 hours on my 2009 model RTV 900 and have changed the fuel filter one time at around 400 hours and it was still clean. No other issues other than the required maintenance.

I'd be concerned about the 'shelf life' of the gas if you couldn't use it quickly.

I have a 30 gallon plastic (blue) shipping barrel that I use for gas.
When we get hurricane warnings and things look iffy I fill the barrel to use in my generator.
These barrels are designed for sever duty and chemical shipping.
I haul it in my PU and move it onto a pallet on my tractor forks to move it.
When threats are over I siphon the gas into my vehicles so it doesn't get old.
If you your SUV has a hitch you could get one of those hitch haulers for the gas cans. I have seen ratings up to 500 lbs.

E10 gasoline does not store well because the ethanol always has traces of water, which promotes sludge formation. Sta-Bil ethanol formula will only get him so far. I agree, the best thing to do is plan on short term storage of fuel. A second option would be to put a fuel filter on the pump, so it gets filtered as it is dispensed. Driving to a gas station to fill jerry cans every 2 or 3 months is not a big deal, and will give better results.

I once looked into long term gasoline storage. First, you have to buy non-ethanol gasoline, which is pretty expensive. Then you have to protect against evaporation of the lighter fractions, which evaporate first and make an engine easy to start. You have to protect the gasoline against slow oxidation, which causes varnish. Then you have to deal with moisture contamination, which is part of all gasoline. The best solution I ever saw was using a small tank of butane to pressurize the gasoline storage tank. That eliminates the need for a pump, suppresses evaporation, and doesn't require admitting oxygen as you empty the tank. Add an antibacterial like Sta-Bil and you can store gas for a long time. It still needs to be filtered as you dispense it.

I've been using Stabil Marine 360 for a bit over 2 years and have, so far, eliminated all of the ethanol induced problems I've had with chain saws, etc. I haven't had a fuel line or carb problem on any of my 2-stroke equipment since I started using the Stabil.

I add to Corvette gas tank, which gets driven only few hundred miles a year. I use about 20-25 gallons of gasoline per month for my non-diesel equipment.

I'll keep all of this in mind, very valid points. I'll start with gas cans...IF I even switch utvs.

This is my gas station. Red gasoline tank is 300 gal. I get it filled once a year to 18mo. I add quart of PRI-G to it on fill up....PRI beats Stabil all to pieces for keeping fuels fresh. Never a problem.

I'm not talking about regular Stabil gas treatment? I use Stabil Marine 360. Prove your point!

Prove my point ? Like 'prepare for court' ?

Hey, I gave my opinion.....based on having gas in sealed drums go 'varnishy' after a year using Stabil, and storing it many years with PRI with no degrading. If that upsets you, so be it.

I've never used the 360 version, perhaps they have improved their formula.....they sure needed to....the original version is crap.

Have you ever used PRI ?
