Thanks for the info and photo, Mike, looks great. I've been trying to decide what depth of pallet shelves to get-- I see a lot of 36" width shelves for sale near me, but not much 42 or 48" width. I'd like to store a couple of mowers and a box scraper, and they're all pretty deep. I guess I could always hold the rack away from the wall. Do you need to bolt these racks to the concrete floor or are they pretty sturdy as they are? In any case, when working up in the air like this you'd want to be certain the tool is attached to the BobTatch and free and clear of the shelving as you start to back out, huh?! :p

They are not presently but can be bolted to the floor as the uprights do have feet on them. I have the power bobtach on the 5610, otherwise detaching the bucket in the air would be a challenge. I have backed away from the shelves very slowly to avoid bringing it all with me. I have the wall side of the rack 14" out from the wall for extra clearance.

PS, Mike, if I'm not mistaken, from the slim sliver visible, I think I recognize a Walker lawnmower in your shop... I have a Walker, which I use around the buildings here for its superb cut and grass pickup. I'll also be using the Walker to vacuum up Fall leaves, and I have the wood chipper attachment for it, which is very impressive.

Gadgenut,
You have sharp eyes. I bought the Walker diesel used last winter and really like the superior cut for grass closer to my house. I have had or tried many different mowers and ztr's and the Walker cut quality is as good as it gets. It's great for leaves as you mentioned. Mine has the high lift dump option, which is nice for dumping over a fence into woods that border my property.

I'm looking at some used pallet racks at auction in my area. They come with wire shelving or decking like this... is this wire alone strong enough to store a Bobcat tool on, such as a grapple or a mower (i.e., 1000 pounds)?

Others have recommended 2x4 or 2x6 lumber and plywood... how do you mount the 2x lumber, or do you just set 46" lengths of 2x front to back across the orange beams?

48" deep pallet racking is more than needed for pallets 42" is more popular.

Wire decking is the way to go. Your pix shows 3 "C" channel members that drop in the L feature built in the shelf cross members, the wire wraps over the outside of the cross member preventing them fron sliding off.

I hold diesel engines, transmissions etc. on them.

The cross members and uprights should be stamped with their weight rating.

Okay, gotcha-- haven't seen in person yet but looking at this photo I suppose the orange beams must have a steel lip or ledge on the inside to support shelves or front to back arms...I had been thinking that shelves sit on top of the orange beams, which is not the case I guess. I think the wire decking would be a good way to go.

My $0.02:

When I hook up, I don't always have the ability to vertically pick right up.

In other words, I need to push the attachment slightly which would impose lateral loads on your racks.

Make sure the rack system is bolted down, and provide a back board, or something for the attachment to bear against so it does not get pushed off the rack and hurt someone or something.

Good Luck,

Yooper Dave

You definately dont want to push some thing thru the side of your building-like forks. The shelving I have is made to hold 2x boards. I cut up 2x12's I took off a trailer when I replaced the floor.
I was taking a pallet off my rack one time and bumped the upright which popped the shelving loose and it fell, lucky It was the only thing on that shelf.
I would anchor it to the floor and bolt the cross members if you can.
