Stone Walls

The farm I grew up on in Pennsylvania had only stone walls for fences - each individual field had a stone wall around it. We don't own the farm any longer - but when I was there a year ago most of those stone fences were still there. Here's a pic of me and my siblings with one of the walls. Date is on the pic!

Here are a couple which I posted in another thread a few years back. Actually the first is more of a pile which looks like it was once some type of loading dock. It's hard to imagine the work put into clearing fields, only to have them grow back in again.

In 2019 I traveled to Chihuahua Mexico and took extensive tours of the countryside. One of the most memorable things I saw was the lack of wire fencing on rangelands. All of the fencing was 4’ high stacked rock walls. Miles and miles of them. And not a rock to be seen in the pastures. I’m guessing that this has been a continuous process over centuries. Very impressive.

I have miles and miles of stone walls, I'll try to take some pictures tomorrow. Some of them have stones of all sizes, those surround fields that were plowed, after plowing they walked the field and picked up every stone they could find. Some only have stones the size of a football or bigger, those were hayfields or pastures, they were never plowed and the farmers only picked up the ones that stuck out of the ground.

We went to Ireland a couple of years ago and they have miles of stone walls. Some on pretty steep hills. All those lines in the photo are stone walls.
