steering problems farm pro 2425

It seems im losing my power steering on my 2425. At times it gets really hard to steer and it even locks up sometimes. If i turn the steering wheel back and forth it seems to free up the steering until the next turn. Has anyone had a similiar problem. Would this be bad rack and pinion? or the little pump(box) under the steering wheel?

No gears involved at all. Best description I've heard is when somebody called it "hydrostatic steering". Check your hydraulic fluid level and suction filter screen. Does the steering improve when you increase the engine RPMs?

i checked the fluid level (behind the seat). Where is the screen located?

Inside the hydraulic fluid reservior, underneath the operator's position. Follow the hydraulic hardline up to where it turns down into that reservior. If you were sitting on the seat, it would be approximately between your shin bones. Remove seat, loosen hydraulic compression fitting, remove cover plate. Suction screen comes out through the hole revealed after cover plate is removed.

screen is clean, and i still have the problem. what are my options? thanks for all your recent input GREG your always a great help. any other suggestions?

Legbreaker - Sorry to be the devil's advocate - and this is just cheap information. (You've been had) This steering system has 4 primary areas: power steering cylinder, steering orbital motor, diversion valve (priority valve for power steering, right hand side of the tractor where all the hydraulic hoses go to) and the main hydraulic pump. If both left and right steering failed, the steering cylinder cups are probably ok. When the steering fails, do you still have your 3 point lifting power? That would tell us if your pump is losing pressure. OK, now then, considering the above is ok, we're down to the proportioning valve. This valve allows the power steering to operate at a lower pressure than the 3 point lifting power does. (Otherwords - should have power steering over lifting power) The worst scenario is the power steering motor. They are very complicated, but can easily be worked on by an experienced mechanic. They have a cylindrical cylinder that hooks to the steering wheel with 101 holes(maybe) less than an eight of an inch diameter, and a stationary housing tube with 101 holes. This has to be timed and installed in the proper sequence. They also have an orbital hydraulic gearing in them. OK, My only suggestion would be to unhook all the lines from the portioning valve and steering motor, and blow compressed air back through all ports. I guess what I'm trying to say is that once in a while part of the hydraulic hose flakes off and gets into the system. Be sure to have a dealer that fully understands the operation of this system, rather than just replacing parts. Hope I'm all wrong, and you find a simpler answer. Keep us informed. Yugo

Power steering motor ?

See attachment. Basically you're looking at a sump, a suction screen (22), a pump (9), a divertor valve (26), a steering wheel (37), a hydraulic steering gear (30), a hydraulic cylinder (32), some hoses/pipes and mounting hardware.

At this point in the discussion - and assuming TPH operation is unaffected - you might want to consider a dirty divertor valve. If the TPH is affected, that opens up new territory.
