In my manual (2010 4320) i beleive it says to start at 1/3 throttle at all times. Is that accurate, or is that just cold start? I normally start most engines at idle. Do you guys do this?

An engine having a constant speed governor starts at full throttle. What speed it runs just after starting is determined by where you position the throttle. That transition period being hundredths of a second ( estimated of course). Often engines need more throttle than low idle to keep running when cold and how cold makes a difference. Myself, like you, prefer to set the throttle at low idle when possible although I've seen engines on equipment like wash pumps etc. designed to run full throttle at start up with no apparent detrimental effects.

In some Deere manuals (790, for one), it states to use full throttle at start up. I never did...I crank the starter and as soon as it catches, I'll increase RPMs to about 1200-1500 once the oil pressure light goes out (which is within a second or two of starting).
That's worked for me for the last ten years and three tractors. This is a cold or warm start up, BTW.
Even if I leave the machine outside over a cold night, same procedure.

When I went to look at the 4600 that I bought, I set the throttle at about 1/3 when I started it the first time. The seller was standing right there, and he said he always starts it at low idle. He seemed offended that I started it at 1/3 throttle in his garage. Anyway, I have since always started it with the throttle pulled all the way back. It starts very quickly, and never has stalled on me. Perhaps cold weather will force a different strategy (I'll use the preheaters then).

I believe my manual does say 1/3 throttle, but I'm sticking with starting in the idle position for now. It works perfectly.
