Starting procedure for 3005/790

   / Starting procedure for 3005/790 #21
Yeah, I think you need a second opinion. My 790 is an '01 or so (old, it seems) and I have the same manifold, or intake heater that Muxster and Mech are referring to.

I'm home with my manuals now, after plowing some more snow. My manual lists the same text for the preheat position and references "allow the engine to preheat". There is no mention in the run position though of pushing the key in for pre-heat. Later it mentions refering to the Cold Weather Starting Procedure using the Intake Air Heater System. In that section it starts with a warning to not use starting fuid as it is equipped with an intake air heater system and an explosion could result. Then it covers the cold starting (40 deg and below, I didn't realize it was required at such warm temps). Preheat for 20 sec, start, adjust idle speed, if rough, repeat. Blue-white exhaust and louder engine is considered normal.

I also have a parts catalog from Feb99 (Ebay find). It shows the same manifold heater. Nothing under "glow", or "plug" in the index.

One final note, I started my tractor this evening at around freezing temp, without the pre-heater and it perked up just fine.

Good luck with this elusive question!

Thanks for all the pictures and comments by all, much apreciated:)

I do remember now when the tractor was delivered, he told me it had glow plugs. He told me to use the pre heat for up to 20 seconds depending on when you last had it running, then you turn it to on and wait a few more seconds before firing.

I HEARD BACK FROM DEALER, maybe you guys can decipher what he said here it is....

Good Afternoon
Thank you for your note. I am glad that you now have room to park all your
vehicles. About the tractor. Your tractor should have glow plugs. it is a
manifold heater. In the new 3005 tractors (not the 790's) you turn the key
to the on position and leave it for 5 to ten seconds. The tractor should
start. On the old tractors you had to push the key "in" which means towards
the steering volume. If yours can be pushed in, then you have an ignition
from the older series, which Deere would do in the transition to the new
series. Both will work effective.
Where the confusion may be with your chat room, is the old style of glow
plug was actually in the engine and it warmed the block up. Not so with the
manifold heater, they warm the air before it is fired.
If you have any other questions or concerns please contact me.
