Starting a tractor by spinning the PTO

I apologize if this is old news but I'm always the last to know.

Surely this has to be one of the top ways to kill yourself or rip off an arm or a leg so don't try this at home. For that matter, don't try it away from home.
It's just a video on what not to do. Got that--what not to do?

Correct me it I'm wrong but wouldn't an overrunning clutch, either internal or external, prevent that from happening. Would it not just allow the shaft to free spin? Just a thought that's he OC has yet another safety feature built in without knowing. It would prevent idiots like this guy from endangering himself and others.

Good thing that knot in the strap comes free and doesn't start winding the other way once the tractor is started.

Interesting concept: Similar to the old wind the rope around the starter cup on small engines. If the rope didn't release it got real interesting..

I find it pretty resourceful. I guess the danger to him is when he is winding up the tow strap and the PTO could engage? Otherwise, no one is anywhere near the PTO when it starts.

Maybe it is just easier to carry a portable battery starter.

I was thinking the same thing, I wonder if eliminating the knot, it would work.

Doesn't seem like it would be unsafe to me. Everyone is clear, and the assistant can just push the clutch in if the strap gets hung up.

I can't believe there would even be a video like this. I wanted to see the strap catch, wind back up and start chopping the car to shreds :laughing:. Its demonstrations like this that may tempt folks to do stupid things.
